David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...although L.A. Takedown is about half the length of Heat, the movie feels so much longer and poorly-paced than its big-screen successor... Rated: 2/4 Jan 24, 2015 Full Review Tim Brayton Antagony & Ecstasy A film much better written than executed... has the appearance at every moment of a hatchet job that got cranked out in record time because nobody involved had any real desire to make it. Audience Member It is great to see a low budget version of a great film. Michael Mann's 1995 masterpiece Heat was actually conceived way back in the 80s by the director Michael Mann. He decided to make it then with the limited budget he had. The scenes and even dialogues are verbatim but it is great to see what a bigger budget can get- from better thespians of the class of Pacino and Deniro to some amazing locations. This is a good film for film students to sit and analyze.(A curiosity sake film if you loved Heat). Not always sure of what was going on in the dialog, but action supreme. Heat was made with an ensemble cast including Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Val Kilmer. Heat was met with critical acclaim and became a financial success. It was written and directed by Michael Mann, and its ensemble cast includes Scott Plank, Alex McArthur, Michael Rooker, Daniel Baldwin, and Xander Berkeley. Takedown, viewing the TV movie as a dry run for the film he had originally written, which was intended as a much more complex and elaborate story. Takedown was Mann's original TV movie of what was to become (in Heat) his epic crime drama. The characters are lacking the depth which Pacino and De Niro would bring to the roles but as a blueprint for what was to come this is a decent enough "first draft" with an excellent shootout scene which still holds up today. But at 90 minutes (Heat was close to 3 hours) Takedown feels rushed and spliced together roughly. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a very good crime movie! This film was remade as Heat! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews
