Haunted by H LADIES' MAN is a clunky, precode melodrama with William Powell playing a gigolo who woos Kay Francis, Carole Lombard, and silent film star Olive Tell. While the movie features beautiful Art Deco sets, Lothar Mendes' direction is static and stage-like. Herman J. Mankiewicz's script tries also to be jazzy but with mixed results. Sometimes, the flirting is risque, other times, the dialogue (and acting) is heavy-handed and melodramatic. All in all, LADIES' MAN is watchable. The star power is great, especially watching Powell and Lombard in the early years of their stardom. Olive Tell is also strong. The story (and script) is intentionally and unintentionally funny. The ending is strange as well. It is a classic pre-Code comedy that is sure to entertain. Powell is charming and debonair as the gigolo, Francis is sophisticated and alluring as the wealthy socialite, and Lombard is funny and vivacious as the young woman who falls in love with him. Lothar Mendes directs the film with a light touch, and Herman Mankiewicz's screenplay is witty and sharp, featuring some great dialogue, especially between Powell and Lombard.
