Helen T. Verongos New York Times Mouret manipulates our sympathies effortlessly as the story zigzags its way... to its ultimately surprising and quite satisfying resolution. Mar 8, 2019 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times Anyone who loves "Dangerous Liaisons" - in any of its iterations - should rush to cue up "Lady J," a period romance with a similarly wicked sense of comic melodrama. Mar 7, 2019 Full Review Joe Leydon Variety "Mademoiselle de Joncquieres" takes a stealthy and slow-burn approach before fully revealing its true colors as a shrewdly choreographed roundelay of scheming, seduction and revenge in the spirit of "Les Liaisons Dangereuses." Sep 27, 2018 Full Review David Walsh World Socialist Web Site Mouret's version is very effective, and well worth seeing. The actors are convincing and the dramatic tension sustained throughout. This is a serious and intriguing work. Feb 10, 2021 Full Review John Serba Decider It's a period drama, no doubt, but you'd never describe it as musty. Mar 15, 2019 Full Review Barbara Shulgasser Common Sense Media French drama about infidelity and passion has nudity. Rated: 3/5 Mar 13, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

isla s This is a nice period/costume drama watch, with an intriguing story and some interesting characters. I enjoyed seeing how Madame de La Pommeraye reacted to the activities of the Marquis. There are some nice poetic pieces of dialogue and there are some pretty surroundings shown. If your a fan of period dramas then I'd recommend this, if your ok with subtitles or otherwise speak French of course. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review eyemovie s Lush costumes and stunning locations can't quite balance the overly philosophical scripting and dialogue. Those who have seen Dangerous Liaisons will recognize the plot -scorned female ex-lover takes revenge on male lothario. In an overly complicated story, a wealthy, fairly young widow, Lady J, eventually succumbs to the seductive advances of a well-known playboy, Marquis Acris. The way this is accomplished visually is confusing and not very romantic. He stays at this woman's gorgeous country house for an extended period, about the first 30 minutes of the film or more, while she refuses him daily, quipping cynically about love and marriage, though he is obviously not offering either. When she finally does give in, it's not with a requisite love scene but rather intimated through conversations. It took me a few scenes to realize they had actually made love since the couple is only show in bed once. After a while, he starts taking trips back to Paris to begin other love affairs, severely wounding the Lady. She then enlists an ex-aristocrat and her stunning daughter to trick him into believing they are respectable, pious women, when in reality, they have become prostitutes to support themselves. Lady J ultimately does humiliate him when Marquis Acris when he marries the daughter turned prostitute believing she's a virgin, incurring the scorn of the entire city of Paris. In the end, Lady J finds herself alone while the Marquis finally falls in love for real with his prostitute/wife and leaves Paris for the country. It's a game of turnabout but doesn't play out well. It's too subtle, too much cat and mouse to become one of the great period dramas. Every line is some philosophy about the reality or unreality of love suffocating all romantic thought. The high points of this film are the acting, costumes and locations but if you're looking for a love story, you won't find it in Lady J. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review sanja s A slow start, but captivating and lavish as it progresses. Such a clever movie with excellent acting and out of this world fine costumes and cinematography. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member it was about lies and truth and the value of being truthful in a world that is full of lies. I think. I gave it a three star rating because even though it was well- made, i found it depressing that making movies about lies and cruel games is the most substantial food we can find right now to feed our souls with. Like, is this really all that we want? We are capable of so much more as human beings. I liked the girl that the Marquis ended up marrying though, she really inspired me to practice being more truthful. And that there is value in being truthful, even if the people around you don't recognize it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member This film would have been even better if the male lead was better cast. The actor in the role just wasn't the dangerous sexy rake that he was supposed to be. He wasn't particularly charming too so it was a stretch to believe women would fall for him. The lead actress was excellent and dominated all her scenes. It was an enjoyable film but was flawed by the miscasting of the male lead. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Honestly, that was the end? Women are fucked no matter what? All men are assholes?
