Experiment of starting and ending this pic with Sophia Loren as an 80-year-old, an alleged aristocrat with a somewhat simpering tedious voice, doesn't come off. Go to Full Review

Whatever the causes of the minor disatisfactions inherent in this film, its major rewards are due to Peter Ustinov's sensitive conception and superb direction. Go to Full Review

Gary and Ustinov fail to be bogged down by the story's inherent banalities because they are quite outside it and its limitations. Go to Full Review

Blu B Aug 21 In a sense this is the worst type of comedy. One that is not just terribly unfunny but also extremely boring and leave lamost no impression on you at all and you start forgetting it 5 minutes after it's over. The acting, soundtrack, and cinematography is all painfully mediocre. The direction is so basic as well. Tons of locales that should be memorable and it never is. The editing is subpar and the pacing is terrible. the last 20 minutes felt like it went 50. The story is like a screwball comedy. And I guess it makes very abre minimum sense but it feels like we just abruptly cut to the next plot point without any setup and "I THINK" that is on purpose to make the jokes work for the outlandish plot but it doesn't. The humor is a major strike also. I'm not sure how to describe it but it's not flat humor but it's somehow "Boring" humor. Like how do you do that? Even in the comedies of the last 30-40 years I've never seen humor like this. It's like the lines are read as expose but there meant to be humorus it feels like. And it's so dry and boring. Skip this. One of the worst Newman films I've seen also. See more Patricia W 09/01/2024 Sucked.Stupid.Newman hamming it up and mugging for the camera. Lady L is an elegant and beautiful baroness of sorts that recalls a faster lifestyle prior to her baron husband where life was fast, her man was faster, and she loved him deeply, but life was hard and money was harder and then she met her husband and life took a different direction... "This was not so much of a house as a house." Peter Ustinov, director of Secret Flight, Billy Budd, Memed My Hawk, Hammersmith is Out, Vice Versa, Private Angelo, and Romanoff and Juliet, delivers Lady L. The storyline for this picture is just okay but is fun to watch unfold and I loved the conclusion. The acting is excellent and the cast delivers awesome performances and includes Paul Newman, Sophia Loren, David Niven, Marcel Dalio, and Philippe Noiret. "I'm in no position to tell you to shut your mouth but I'd like to." I came across this on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and had to DVR it based on it starring the marvelous Paul Newman and Sophia Loren. This was a little disappointing based on the excellent cast and their solid performances, but the story isn't as fascinating as I felt it could have been; however, the conclusion is perfect and makes this worth seeing once for fans of the classics. "Never tamper with a policeman's dignity." Grade: C+ See more s r @ScottR 07/14/2013 Despite its many shortcomings It still has some charm with the cast. I especially enjoyed all the old fashioned circular bombs, they had a certain comical appeal. Ustinovs many cameos were hilarious. See more Read all reviews
