Robert E. Sherwood LIFE There is a spark of genuine inspiration in its direction, and Miss Shearer's performance, in the flashier half of a dual role, is startlingly good. Audience Member Rather sedate MGM silent melodrama, notable for Norma Shearer's dual role. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member silent vehicle 4 norma shearer but also first appearance (uncreditied) of joan crawford Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Lady of the Night is not 6 minutes as indicated on Flixter - actually, it packs quite the story into only a 70 minute film. Norma Shearers plays two different women born at the same time - one a poor girl named Molly and the other a rich girl named Florence. Both fall in love with inventor David (Malcolm McGregor). David falls in love with Florence, despite the overwhelming love Molly has for him. And there is the rather goofy, but likeable "Chunky" (George K. Arthur) who is madly in love with Molly - and she certainly does not feel the same toward him. David comes from a poorer background as well, but is moving up in the world. Unfortunately Molly senses this. The sense of longing is much felt in this outstanding silent film - and has rarely been captured so well on film. Shearer is excellent in the dual role. It is particularly heartbreaking where there is a big sacrifice made. A wonderful silent. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member ms shearer is beautiful. i was in awe of the camera shot of "the socialite" and "the lady of the night", both played by shearer, sitting in the back seat of the car, side by side. this is 1925! and then they hugged! i'm still mesmerized. how did they do that? aside from effects, sweet little story in which it's difficult to dislike a single character (considering it's two women vying for the same man). they say it hadn't been seen for 70 years and it was only once aired on television before tonight. i feel privileged. thank you tcm! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Made in 1924, silent, and absolutely incredible! And the star -- Norma Shearer -- was hhhhhot, and way ahead of her time. Was on TCM tonight. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
