Rene Rodriguez Miami Herald Unlike David Fincher's hypnotic Zodiac, which this film often recalls, Serial Killer 1 isn't a speculative meditation on an unsolved crime. Rated: 3/4 Jun 16, 2016 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times While a film like "Serial Killer 1" may disappoint anyone expecting "Bullitt" or "Lethal Weapon," its focus on legwork and motivation could well appeal to fans of "Law & Order" - the TV show and the social construct. May 12, 2016 Full Review Courtney Howard Fresh Fiction What should make for a gripping thriller comes across as Polisse meets an episode of Law & Order: SVU, never being as good as either. Audience Member 12/21/16 Netflix Another Sub Titled, Foreign Language winner, this one from France. This is a taut, well written, well acted police procedural based on a true story. You can feel the frustration among the cops from 36 as they try and track down a brutal rapist/murderer. There is some political infighting and missed clues but it does keep the viewer on the edge of your seat. These foreign films continue to give Hollywood releases all they can handle. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member More satisfying than the other popular French police series, "Spiral" ("Engrenages") it takes a less manic look at the hard work of solving crime in a society with conflicting strains of racism, traditions and imperfections of the judicial system, sensational press coverage, and the pathos of family and the effects of child neglect and abuse. The characters are real and the acting is superb. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member The film chronicles the hunt and trial of a 1990s serial killer, dubbed "The Beast of the Bastille". From 1991 to 1997, Guy Georges assaulted, tortured, raped and killed seven women in the neighbourhood of the famed Revolutionary-era Parisian prison, the Bastille. Georges was arrested on 26 March 1998 and admitted his guilt to police. Described by psychiatrists as a "narcissistic psychopath", he was sentenced in April 2001 to life imprisonment, without the possibility of parole for 22 years. The term, "SK1", which refers to "Serial Killer 1", is a codename given by the police to the first serial killer who was identified and arrested via DNA analysis in France. "L´Affaire SK1" is a period drama thriller set in both the early 1990s and the early 2000 crosscutting policeofficer Franck Magne´s (Raphaël Personnaz) obsessive hunt for the "The Beast of the Bastille" and the actual trial against Guy Georges. Within the serialkiller genre "L´Affaire SK1" offers nothing new but rather stick to the traditional set up with brooding characters, the layer-by-layer unraveling of clues, doubt vs certainty etc. The acting is ok, but maybe a bit wobbly at times. I must say that french cinema is in a bit of a slump and has been for quite some time in my book. And "L´Affaire SK1" is unfortunately not an exception even if effort has been put into the film to create a moving drama based on a horrifying real story. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member This police work drama felt a little long to me. I liked the seeing a bunch of the leg work these police officers had to undertake in order to catch this serial killer. I was actually surprised by how few victims there were and with the lack of cooperation within the police forces. The movie made it seem as though these officers are more worried about getting promotions than catching dangerous criminal. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member L'Affaire SK1 : un bon policier français basé sur une histoire vraie ; un peu long, mais saisissant de constater les errements d'une enquête de 10 ans. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Un bon film policier historique sur les meurtres de 1991 `1998 de Guy Georges.
