Audience Member Amazingly invested in highlighting the ways in which women are in a Catch 22 around the globe...the musical numbers are quite good, with the opening number featuring 7 costume changes for the singer. The tone shifts quite abruptly from section to section, but it is still worth the multiple moods it evokes in the viewer. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member LAJJA (2001) - multiple stories revolving around womens empowerment (or the lack thereof) in a male dominated society. Pretty heavy handed and preachy at times. Some interesting performances. A lot of familiar faces - Anil Kapoor, Ajay Devgan, Jackie Shroff, Rekha and of course fabulous dancing by Madhuri Dixit. Yay, even a bonus of SRK (as they watched one of his movies). Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member The movie show us the brutality and sexism of women in India, starting from marriage, having baby, freedom and being independent. It is one of rare screenplay I've ever come across while watching Indian films, it may have some plot holes and cliche written all over it, but again an interesting look on how women are treated in India (or maybe in other country in the world?). Great performances too by none other than; Rekha, Madhuri Dixit, Mahima Chaudry and Manisha Koirala. 6/10. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Manisha Koirala is a great actress and i have liked her in many movies, she was great in this one, Lajja that is a movie expressing women's rights Bollywood style. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Good songs, actors; hopefully the movie will be good! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member A movie about female empowerment with an item number, a knight in shining armor, and a sperhero? Madhuri Dixit's performance and the re-write of the Ramayana almost saved this movie (which should have ended three characters earlier than it did). Heavyhanded dialogue, a ridiculous plotline, waaaaay too many characters, and DULL direction drag down good work by Mads and Rekha. Most infuriatingly, it continues to promote gender roles; women are the keepers of parampara and the izzat of the family, and of course they can't be happy unless they're happily married.
