Richard Whittaker Austin Chronicle 12/13/2019
It's a woozy, briny daydream. a gleefully idiotic antidote to everything. Lake Michigan Monster literally makes no sense, and that's why you need to just hold your breath and dive in. Go to Full Review

Bolstered with inventiveness, Lake Michigan Monster is nothing short of a future cult classic. A joyous experience for anyone who loves comedy and monster movies, or even just one of the two. Go to Full Review

Lake Michigan Monster is a gloriously weird mash-up of genres and decades that revels in its low-budget strangeness and offbeat humor. Go to Full Review

A fast, ridiculous, and undeniably entertaining experience. It does not pretend to be anything else. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

There's an absurdist dreamlike quality drenching every frame, and with a run-time of a little over an hour, the visual gags and quick zooms never tire and the film's bag of tricks is never quite empty. Go to Full Review

Lake Michigan Monster is an energetic, humorous, and beautifully shot independent film that expertly captures the world of B films, comedies of the silent era in a wonderfully nautical way. Go to Full Review

Gnoran L Oct 15 This movie feels like what would happen if you asked an AI to make a movie out of a chronically online redditor's personality See more Irate T @IrateTyrant Aug 27 Black & White Comedy hasn't been this good since the Marx Brothers This was somehow surprisingly a little bit better than Hundreds of Beavers for me. While I loved HoB's take on Chaplin and Keaton, it didn't have quite enough hardcore slapstick. This, on the other hand, absolutely supplied a couple of full-hearted LOLs. A lot of people say it's Lovecraftian, and yeah, I get it. But I'd say that going into this, just be prepared for a Creature from the Black Lagoon parody. Ryland Brickson Cole Tews is a real genius, no matter what. The writer of this movie went on to direct HoB. But I think they should have shared the same credits; Tews as director/actor, and Cheslik as co-writer. Tews is just so talented! See more Tom K Jun 1 You can’t tear your eyes away from it. The gags are relentless and just when you thought it could not get any stranger, It Does! See more Tim M @tgmacman Apr 12 Resourceful in its old-fashioned aesthetics to make a memorable low-budget parody, Lake Michigan Monster is exactly the type of nautical nonsense we need. See more Kevin P 01/25/2025 A hilarious sh*tpost of a movie that feels like someone took the $20 budget and ran with it, taking advantage of every single frame with as much bizarre gut-busting jokes and surreal camerawork as humanely possible. It’s remarkably impressive for its budget and amateur background and clearly takes great influence from Monty Python and all those bad B-movie serials from the 1960's and 50's. It was neat recognizing sites from Milwaukee and Muskegon that they shot on-location, such as the Lake Ferry Express or the downtown Milwaukee skyline. It moves at a very brisk pace and is so dense with clever gags and interesting filming techniques that makes this movie easily rewatchable and a new underrated Halloween cult-classic. See more Mike P 09/20/2024 Campy creature feature is good for a few laughs... This is just relentlessly satirizing Universal Monster movies from the 40s; a whole venerable subgenre; the kind we all used to watch on Son of Svengoolie back in the day... And the setting; Lake Michigan circa Milwaukee; is so unique for a movie setting, that's it's well nigh irresistible. This is the kind of people watch at a party and get drunk to...very trippy and silly. Recommended See more Read all reviews
