Audience Member I watched this as my second film of Rivette and as much as I loved him, I could never dissect his material. Not that it is obtuse or anything like that but it diverts like a meandering river. Imagine a day where you are looking through a globe, you trace the rivers, after that, you make a spin and point somewhere else and do something else. The world is linked but sudden shifts from rivers to say a city in the other side is rather bizarre. That was what Rivette reminded me of after this film. His love of the occult and conspiracy is pasted everywhere here and even in instances like the editing, we see so many links to it. Rivette, probably the most spiritual of the New Wave but yet unique from similar artists like Bresson, is really good in his kingdom, how big the population, it's anyone's guess. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This film has an interesting cast of which the house is an essential member. It offers much tension in it's long halls, locked rooms and broken pieces. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Similar to Va Savoir in some ways, this explores the creative process as well as how theater and life become one through actors rehearsing for a play. The setting is classic Rivette, almost too obvious - a strange mansion with many secrets. While this deals with Rivette's themes more rigorously than Va Savoir and might be his most self-reflexive and personal film, this doesn't work very well in a more conventional narrative sense. The male characters are among the least interesting and the chemistry between Birkin and Chaplin doesn't approach the level of spontanety of Berto/Labourier or Berto/Ogier.
