walter m "The Dictator's Guns" starts with Captain Jacques Cournot(Lino Ventura) arriving in the Caribbean to inspect a boat for purchase by Hugo Hendrix(Alberto de Mendoza) from Rae Osborne(Sylva Koscina). That plan is upended by Morrison(Leo Gordon) who decides to cut out the middleman, taking the boat for himself and his gang, including an unwilling Hugo, leaving bodies in their wake. Regardless, Rae would still like her uninsured boat back, especially considering it was the only thing left to her by her late husband. That's when Cournot reminds her of the whole needle in a haystack thing which is made that much more difficult by a recent hurricane. "The Dictator's Guns" is a solid and respectable thriller(from 1965) whose complex jazz-inflected opening sequences belie the actual simplicity of the plot. Set on a Caribbean island whose population consists mainly of people who barely eke out a living, this movie is not just about the desperation of its central characters who are all looking for a paycheck or a score, not necessarily any kind of redemption. Of that conflict, there are a couple of extreme close-ups that I am rather fond of. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
