Zach Provo (James Coburn), a half-Indian outlaw, has spent 11 years in shackles, dreaming of enacting revenge on Sam Burgade (Charlton Heston), the sheriff who put him away. After a sudden escape from a chain gang, Provo recruits his fellow prisoners for a buried-loot mission that is, really, a pretext for attempting revenge on Burgade. After the gang kidnaps Sam's daughter, Susan (Barbara Hershey), Sam becomes a man possessed, leading to a violent, bloody showdown between him and Provo.

kevin o 06/19/2023 ...violent western has Chuck after daughters kidnappers. Always felt on the verge of being a much better film. Still it fills the time. See more 01/03/2014 140105: This is a very entertaining, but harsh, movie. Amazing actors and acting. All are a force but especially Hershey, Coburn, Wilcox, Quade and, shit, on and on and on. Great cinematography. Great locations. Don't think I'd ever seen it before, as in my youth. Can't believe I have missed out for nearly forty years. The slow motion to a rape scene, as well as James Coburn's evil nature, are hard to take. Actually, there are many scenes of extreme violence. Even by today's standards I found this film a bit nasty.
