Critics Consensus

Last Love benefits from a typically strong Michael Caine performance, but it's ultimately too mawkish and dawdling to make much impact.

A melancholic cross between Venus and Goodbye, Mr Chips, which could have been more enticingly entitled Venus and Chips. Go to Full Review

The film is a little too soft-centred to do justice to its own themes of bereavement, jealousy and family breakdown. Go to Full Review

“Last Love” is a poignant film about lost souls desperate to plug holes in their lives. It’s charming, sweet, somber, and heartbreaking. Go to Full Review

Nettlebeck has amassed an interesting cast likely to attract attention, so it's disheartening that the film is ultimately a rather ungainly and predictable familial drama. Go to Full Review

Giorgio G Aug 18 Though Michael Caine is surely a great actor, I was never a great fan of his as he mostly had this air of arrogance. But somehow this part of Mr. Morgan seems to have been written for him and his personality. One just made for the other. Thus said, the story is heartwarming, deeply showing the dilemma of elderly people, once they are left alone, but not in a sad and desperate way. Pauline is like a fresh bright candle, a new book to be read, a new country to be explored, but often wrapped up in her own problems herself. It's a sweet story with various characters soul searching for solutions. Beautifully produced and perfectly performed. 7/10 points!. Much was said that I'm not sure I really understood exactly what information or family secret the protagonists were trying to convey. How did a Princeton's professor family become so rich? And Michael Caine playing an American just didn't ring so true. Besides, the movie was really slow. But it wasn't bad - maybe we were just too tired to watch it. And Paris is such a photogenic city - I really became a bit nostalgic and sad that I didn't grow up there... See more 04/26/2020 She’s terrific.
