Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times A devilishly complicated thriller of superior class. Rated: 3.5/4 Oct 23, 2004 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com …it's the literate, urbane script that provides the transformative missing link between staid 40’s and 50’s detective programmers and lush, all star whodunnits of the 70’s…an acerbic, witty assault on Hollywood’s hidden secrets from Sondheim and Perkins. Rated: 5/5 Sep 20, 2024 Full Review Michael Clark Epoch Times Regardless, watching a cast of (then) Hollywood A-listers playing spoiled D-list brats getting what-fer in a foreign land will give many viewers cause to snicker and revel in seeing them receive their just desserts. Rated: 3.5/5 Sep 8, 2023 Full Review Trace Thurman Horror Queers Podcast Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins (yes, those ones) have crafted an exceptionally clever (and bitchy) murder mystery. Tons of fun! Rated: 4/5 Dec 28, 2022 Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast An overly complicated "murder" mystery filled with reprehensible rich people. What's not to love? Credit Perkins and Sondheim for crafting such a bitchy, fun ride. Rated: 3.5/5 Dec 22, 2022 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies Once you get to what matters – good characters, good concept, good storytelling – the movie sparkles. helder f A bit discombobulated, particularly in its beginning. It eventually finds some focus and becomes a nice mystery story. Everything else besides the mystery is secondary and sort of banal. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/17/24 Full Review Ted B I saw this movie when it first came out. Watching it again, it seems a little dated. But that's mostly because it helped originate a film genre... a mystery film with an all-star cast and a plot that mystery aficionados love to read in Agatha Christie-style books. "The Glass Onion" and "Knives Out" can thank this under-appreciated movie for their heritage. As I said, I had seen this movie once before. However, I had forgotten how it ends. It was so well disguised that I didn't see that ending coming... again!! My biggest complaint with this movie was that I thought it was a little too long. I think a lot of misinformation was thrown in there, just as red herrings, but it never really added anything to the plot. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/16/24 Full Review Simon T Very boring Agatha Christie pastiche (scripted by Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins), centering on a games playing tycoon (Coburn) who invites a bunch of chums on to his yacht in the South of France in order to expose a few secrets. Herbert Ross directs dreamily, the performances are half-hearted, the whole thing is shapeless and irritating. Spot the number of times the cast look at the camera. A TV Film of the Week, deservedly forgotten. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/15/24 Full Review Steve D Too dated and slow to work. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/03/23 Full Review j f It kind of annoyed me for some reason Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/24 Full Review Kevin P The murder-mystery movie against which all others are judged.
