Nell Minow Common Sense Media Outstanding action and performance; lots of blood. Rated: 3/5 Dec 28, 2010 Full Review Richard Schickel TIME Magazine It's easy to stand back and wax ironic about The Last Samurai. But it's not all that difficult to succumb to its full-spirited romanticism either. Aug 25, 2008 Full Review Geoff Andrew Time Out Competently mounted in its studiedly immersive, elongated way, Zwick's earnest costume epic dresses a knee-jerk, reactionary sensibility in exotic garb. Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Anderson Jones E! Online Is a romance really necessary, no matter how ridiculous, just to prove the two male leads aren't in love with each other? Apr 26, 2022 Full Review Tony Black Cultural Conversation The Last Samurai delivers one of the stronger historical adventure epics of recent years. Rated: 4/5 Feb 16, 2021 Full Review David Walsh World Socialist Web Site Zwick's film idealizes the "noble savage" and denigrates modern society not from the point of view of a serious critique of capitalism, but in a misanthropic, right-wing populist manner. Benjamin H Tom Cruise commands the screen in The Last Samurai, a humungous, richly painted and emotionally powerful epic that does sometimes bow down to some of its cliches, but kept me absorbed due to its fully fledged storytelling and exhilarating action. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/24/25 Full Review Ron T After years and listening to the critics I finally watched it as I couldn’t find anything else. Not sure why the audience loves it and critics not as much. My vote is with the audience who want to be entertained. Don’t listen to the critics who for what ever reason might be a little biased. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/13/25 Full Review Hash Y Directed by Edward Zwick, known for Glory, Legends of the Fall and Courage under fire to name a few, this wonderful epic set in post feudal Japan at a time where the people are transitioning over to more western values. Staring Tom Cruise as a grizzly Civil War captain (so around the mid/late 1800's) He is sent to train Japanese soldiers to fight again a rebelion led by Ken Watanabe as the enigmatic Katsumoto. Head of one of the last true Samurai villages. What follows is a glorious clash of cultures as Tom/Captain Algren see's the true beauty of Japananse Samurai Culture. In the end Algren joins the rebelion against imperial Japan, let by the young and confused Emperior Meiji. Glorious battle scenes, and beatiful sets create an amazing and seemingly autentic look at the end of the Samurai era. I enjoyed every minute of this movie, featuring some great actions in small to medium roles. A feast to the eyes and senses, I can highly recommend this movie. While it is not set again realistic historical events, there is some loose connection with the Satsuma rebellion of 1877 led by Saigo Takamori. The movie may take some liberties with the historcial depiction of its characters and events, but it none the less delights and entertains. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/12/25 Full Review Audience Member A pretty darn good movie that captures the warrior spirit well. Tom Cruise shines as an alcoholic veteran that bonds with the samurai culture and eventually becomes one. 4.5/5 stars. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/31/25 Full Review Steven B Cruise at his possibly best. Great flick with high moral commentary about war. How they rated it 66% and viewers went 86%.
