In this adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's final, unfinished novel, Monroe Stahr (Robert De Niro) is a legendary hollywood producer hailed as a "boy genius" during the studio system of 1930s Hollywood. Stahr blithely contends with neurotic stars (Tony Curtis, Jeanne Moreau), a union organizer (Jack Nicholson), his adversary (Robert Mitchum), a difficult writer (Donald Pleasence), and his mysterious girlfriend (Ingrid Boulting), but his relentless micromanaging may be his undoing.

Pauline Kael The New Yorker Kazan's work seems to be a reaction against the shrill energy he has sometimes used to keep a picture going. He's trying something quiet and revelatory, but he seems to have disowned too much of his temperament. Jan 20, 2024 Full Review Variety Producer Sam Spiegel's contribution is admirable, but Elia Kazan's direction of the Pinter plot seems unfocussed though craftsmanlike. Robert De Niro's performance as the inscrutable boy-wonder of films is mildly intriguing. Apr 10, 2007 Full Review Geoff Andrew Time Out De Niro proves again how well he can carry a part, and is particularly good in scenes dealing with the day-to-day business of movie-making. Jun 24, 2006 Full Review James Kendrick Q Network Film Desk an oddly staid drama that is consistently flat and mannered, much more interesting as a historical artifact than a cinematic experience Rated: 2/4 Mar 27, 2024 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies The Last Tycoon may be a mild curiosity because of both Fitzgerald and Thalberg but it's not a good film. Rated: 2.5/5 Jan 12, 2024 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Among 1976 releases set in Hollywood’s golden past, it may not be as good as Peter Bogdanovich’s underrated Nickelodeon but it bests Gable and Lombard and Won Ton Ton, the Dog Who Saved Hollywood. CodyZamboni Z DeNiro hits a homerun as movie studio chief, Movie works best showing the behind the scenes of movie making in Hollywood's Golden Age, Sadly the look and design of the movie comes across as cheap TV movie quality, Film goes further downhill with an overlong doomed romance subplot with a scatterbrained boring girl, DeNiros first date with her goes on and on for half an hour, Film should've focused more on Theresa Russell ------ she is so much sexier, charistmatic, and fun. Movie gets better and quite poignant when DeNiro gets kicked out of the studio. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/02/24 Full Review Blu B One of the most boring things from the 70's I've seen. The acting is ok enough which is such a dissappointment given the absolutely loaded cast this has and the director behind it. Mitchum is probably the best thing in this but doesn't get much time. No one has any chemistry, no humor, charm, and a lot of times no character really. The love story between DeNiro and the Girl I don't buy it in the slightest. The cinematography isn't good either. The setting is memorable and there is loads of lavish memorable sets and production value, but it somehow is just lifeless and with basic camerawork never is able to compensate for the mediocre acting. The editing, pacing, and music are all horrifcally bad in this. The soundtrack is just the same clarinet played every 20 minutes and is so boring. This has such a dry tone throughout it also because music is barely used. The worst part is there is basically no story here. This is about a Movie Mogul from the Golden Era and stuff just happens to him. The worst part is in the middle with the TERRIBLY draggy and boring love story that goes on for 20+ minutes. This never chains these events into a cohesive plot or any commentary because it just feels like it rambles on with no purpose. No one is likeable, nothing pops, nothing is memorable, there just is a somehow a whole lot of nothing here. What a terrible waste of All Star talent. Skip This. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/16/23 Full Review Jelisije J A movie with theme and messages with little to no story. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/10/23 Full Review Audience Member I have no idea why anyone would give this movie any positive reviews. The dialog was ridiculous & boring. Deniro stared his way through the movie & so did his boring "mysterious " gf. I wanted to like it. Kept waiting for something truly interesting to happen, nothing did. Bore! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member An all-star list of players -- adapted from a famous writer with first-hand experience about the topic. A meeting of aging Hollywood with young, up-and-coming Hollywood. A great director.... and yet, a terribly, poorly executed movie. The DeNiro "love scenes" are cringeworthy and unwatchable. The plot is all over the place... with the core of the plot coming to screen (along with Jack Nicholson's character) in the last 20 minutes of the movie and lasting less than 15 minutes. (How does Nicholson get 5th starring credit when he's in the movie at the end of the 3rd act in only 2 scenes?) I don't know any history on this project, but it felt rushed, incomplete and self-indulgent. For the high-brow crowd who love obscure plays so they can color in the meaning, this might be their cup of tea. But for the average folk paying 5¢, this movie will bore you to tears and make you feel every minute of the 2-hour run time. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Slow and boring. Kept thinking something would happen, never did Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Read all reviews
