Empire Magazine Superb example of the gendai-geki brand of petit-bourgeois melodrama Rated: 4/5 Feb 2, 2010 Full Review Trevor Johnston Time Out Cinema that speaks to the soul. Rated: 5/5 Feb 2, 2010 Full Review Wendy Ide Times (UK) Formal and restrained - the sort of cinema that demurely keeps the audience at arm's length. But it has a mild humour. Rated: 4/5 Feb 2, 2010 Full Review Joshua Polanski Boston Hassle It’s such a simple film—as Ozu films basically promise—and that’s because life is simple. Jul 5, 2024 Full Review Jeffrey M. Anderson Combustible Celluloid Late Autumn lacks the sublime final moments of Late Spring, but Ozu seems more relaxed, more reflective and more in control here. Jul 16, 2010 Full Review David Parkinson Radio Times Confounding stylistic expectations, he experiments with a variety of transitional devices while structuring the narrative around blocks of linked scenes. Audience Member Masterpiece! Ozu cannot be stopped! One of the best of the best! But ALL of Ozu's works are his best! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/11/24 Full Review Audience Member I never cease to be impressed by Ozu's ability to communicate his fondness for the ordinary; for me his pillow shots clear a space for the viewer to dwell on those quiet moments which so quickly slip away from us. Through an omission of melodrama, he invites us to regard the inherent wonders of everyday life, an aspiration that stands as an undeniably compassionate service to his viewers. "Late Autumn" offers up everything that we love about Ozu's work, including sly comedy, poignancy, and an exquisitely delicate touch. Again focusing on the interplay between the joy of marriage and its significance as a bittersweet transition in life, he exchanges the paternal perspective for a maternal one, allowing Setsuko Hara an opportunity to play a role which is the direct reverse of those she has portrayed before. To approach "Late Autumn" is to ease your way into a work that slowly but surely works its charm on you, leaving you reflecting on the myriad pleasures and troubles which so enliven the daily human experience. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review william d I consider myself an Ozu fan, but I just couldn't get into this one. It's just a bunch of busybodies meddling into other people's lives, and the strong dramatic moments that Ozu's films normally end with are missing here. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review s r Another simple and beautiful drama by Ozu. The subtle nuances of Japanese culture make this movie that much better. It's about people trying to help others find love, but how things can go wrong. A slow film, but it's still good. Saw on HBO. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Yasujiro Ozu directed this wonderful look at love and marriage, focusing on the relationship of a mother and daughter.
