Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online As the film leads up to its bloody conclusion, there's a sense of peace that falls upon our hero, a reparation that he is unable to find at the local church or even with his son. Rated: B Sep 1, 2017 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com Damici gives his memorable protagonist enough life to hold it together more often than it would have otherwise. He's great here. The movie around him, not so much. Rated: 2/4 Nov 21, 2014 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times A sprightly horror movie about finding new purpose for old bones. Nov 20, 2014 Full Review John Townsend Starburst Late Phases is a decent, occasionally interesting film, but in a crowded subgenre it sadly won't live long in the memory. Jeepers C First off, there hasn't been many good werewolf movies since "The Howling". A couple standout through the years. Some of my favorites include American Werewolf in London, Silver Bullet, Dog Soldiers, Underworld, Ginger Snaps, and Company of the wolves. Late Phases falls on my favorite werewolf movies too. This movie has practical effects, original story and my favorite actor from "Stake Land" stars in it. The movie starts out with a blind, retired war veteran moving into a retirement community to live, except there's just one problem. The nightmare he faces his first night is a werewolf attack, that leaves his guide dog dead. He has one one to prepare for the next full moon. The movie is really character driven and original. The practical effects and effects are quite good considering the budget. This is still one of my favorite werewolf movies to this date and that is says alot for it. Give it a try. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/21/24 Full Review Tim M For a low budget movie this is a pretty unique story line where we have a believable protagonist. The main transformation sequence is captured in a seemles shot, With very little cgi. The teeth falling out over the floor is a lovely touch. Whilst not a prefect movie it must be recognised that it is not a big budget movie in any sense. However it does so equip itself very well and is at least thought provoking when one puts oneself in the position of a blind person dealing with the situation that it presented. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/18/23 Full Review Taylor L Like John Wick ("they killed my dog!") mixed with Home Alone (home invasion prep), Gran Torino (abrasive old vet with guns), and werewolves. An undeniably fun premise (a werewolf let loose in an isolated retirement community with a crotchety old, blind Vietnam vet in investigative pursuit) executed reasonably well, Late Phases harkens back to '70s and '80s exploitation movies in both story and a Charles Bronson-esque protagonist, right down to the moustache. It's not a full-blown studio production and the practical effects aren't exactly up to Cronenberg's standards, but there's a healthy sense of self-awareness and exaggerated grit from Nick Damici as the grizzled and unapologetic Ambrose McKinley. Fun and worth the watch to see an action protagonist who goes for his hearing aid just before loading the Smith & Wesson, even if the werewolf designs are a bit less than terrifying. Compared to the veritable flood of action films headed up by veteran actors in their golden years, Late Phases uses the same kind of talent but in a much more entertaining way, without all the jump cuts to make a 60 year-old man move as if he's 30. (2.5/5) Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/25/22 Full Review Audience Member 1.7 . I kinda feel like you need to have at least one likeable character or above average acting Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/25/22 Full Review jon s Certainly not spectacular, but much better than expected. It's reminiscent of Bubba Ho Tep's meditation on the indignities of aging and regret, but played as straight horror rather than comedy. A solid werewolf B-movie.
