Andrew Sarris Observer Ms. Wright and all her acting colleagues provide very persuasive performances amid the shifting perspectives of Mr. Ruscio's convoluted storytelling. Aug 8, 2007 Full Review Mark Olsen Los Angeles Times Ruscio would rather add forced narrative complications than get to the actual core of what he's tossing out there, the sacrifices made in the name of relationships, dreams dashed or discarded. Rated: 2/5 Aug 2, 2007 Full Review Owen Gleiberman Entertainment Weekly The movie Little Children wanted to be. Rated: B+ Aug 2, 2007 Full Review Scott Foundas L.A. Weekly It casts an increasingly hypnotic spell, thanks in no small measure to Wright - a fearless actress (and the real-life wife of writer-director Ruscio) who brings this sometimes despicable, often heartbreaking character to life with every atom of her being. Aug 2, 2007 Full Review Brian Orndorf eFilmCritic.com The film hardly registers as an open-wound document of a spirit more lost than she cares to confront. Instead, Laura Smiles exists somewhere in the middle, frozen by its pretension and incapacity to engage. Rated: C- Jul 30, 2007 Full Review David Noh Film Journal International The film unfortunately ends as just another misguided indie, artily straining for substance. Audience Member "when i was a child i used to believe that good things happen to good people now I don't believe on that crap." After her boyfriend died. Laura seems to be afraid to have a serious relationship with a man. She must to the psychological trauma cause by the tragic incident. The fear of falling deeply in love again is what makes laura's life into mess. A New original plot, for me, its appealing. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Clever editing. Very Frenchie in style, neat, decent, & surprisingly absorbing. Petra Wright is simply wonderful. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Laura Smiles is a story about death and regret, about wanting to rewind time and about grieving. This movie is the most touching, riveting and thought-provoking movie I have seen in a long time. Through flashbacks you get to see the transition of one person from two different time periods. It was wonderfully filmed and directed. It showed such a profound message. How a love can be so deep, how a certain love can be the only thing that really matters. Petra Wright was incredible as Laura, she had this terrific way of using her voice and her facial expressions to truly touch the audience. She reached me and managed to make all the character's feelings dig into me. This was a truly astonishing movie about not being able to forget someone. All the feelings and sorrows of the movie were so discernible and so clear, but also so magical. It will forever stay in my heart and I will always be reminded of the love's true powers. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Someone has to review it... described as "the movie Little Children wanted to be," I actually think it's the opposite - Little Children took desperation and used it as a vehicle to be life affirming. This movie, though tender and smart for quite a while, turns out to be pretty damning of life, and takes ridiculous lengths to get there. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member It's an interesting profile in self-destruction until the script becomes unhinged itself and has Laura doing things that are not so much outrageous as hilariously stupid. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member think of how many women you see at the supermarket who are just like laura Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
