Critics Consensus

Unnecessarily violent and unflinchingly absurd, Law Abiding Citizen is plagued by subpar acting and a story that defies reason.

Keith Uhlich Time Out It's basically Saw with Gerard Butler as Jigsaw, which means he's as righteous of body as he is of mind. Rated: 2/5 Jan 6, 2021 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online There were surprises, twists and turns and could get graphic at times, but overall the movie was fast-paced, well performed, and kept your attention until the very end. Rated: B+ Sep 12, 2017 Full Review Giles Hardie Sydney Morning Herald For large portions of Law Abiding Citizen we're not sure who is going to be the winner here, nor who we want to be, and though it won't make for much of a date flick, as far as intelligent action flicks go, it gets two big burly thumbs up. Henry W With all the $0 bail bonds for suspected criminals who get released and kill again, I empathize with the main character. When the justice system fails, it's vigilante time. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/23/24 Full Review Tímea K Must seen movie. I don't know how I missed this before. I could say, one of the best movie I have seen for a long time. Gerard Butler is great in it, highly recommended. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/15/24 Full Review Hesam K Although this movie is unrealistic and exaggerated, I enjoyed the plot of the film. A man takes full revenge on the legal system and all the actors involved who let the killer and rapist of his wife and daughter off easy through a plea deal. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/12/24 Full Review Apple T Sometimes you just need a movie with action, thrills, threat, psycho murders and handsome actors. I did enjoy watching this. I did! BUT, and here's the buts.... SPOILERS AHEAD I just could never quite believe Gerard Butler as a bad guy. I understand why the character went off the deep end, but i didn't see it in Gerard's eyes, expression or speech. I didn't believe him. Yes ok, perhaps that may be due to the fact that i find him quite attractive, but equally, it could be because he just naturally gives off powerful "good guy who saves the day" vibes. Who knows. So i suspended my sense of disbelief. When I saw the credits I noticed that he was one of the producers and I thought "Ah that explains it. He was probably sick of being type-cast and wanted a different type of role to stretch in to where he could show his other acting skills." I'm not sure he succeeded and I do wonder if he would have been cast in that role, if he hadn't been a producer. As for Jamie Foxx, he was bloody amazing as Ray Charles in the movie, Ray, but somehow, in this movie, he just seemed a bit bla. In my opinion, the freshest acting came from Leslie Bib, Viola Davis and Bruce McGill. Saying that, if you just go with it anyway, it is an enjoyable movie. Did anyone else get tiny reminders of the film Se7en? Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/09/24 Full Review David S It starts okay but gets more and more ridiculous to the point where they get into the secret lair, find his stock of semtex on the shelf in boxes clearly labelled 'plastic explosive semtex' and Jamie Fox dramatically says 'f**k, semtex' (just in case we missed the labels on the boxes) then they find his cleaning job schedule with exact time and place where he's working, conveniently on a clipboard on top of everything else on his computer desk...it's like they've seen how it works in other suspense thrillers and either missed the point completely or are joking and it's a parody. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/07/24 Full Review Michael M Excellent film 💎 a good story with resemblances of Punisher and SAW characters and films, starting with a good family man falling down a path of vengeance and blood for being victim of the biggest of injustice on his life. The movie is crude and real thought an extensive BIO of the main character (Butler) could have been better since he's basically a master mind. Also the ending is a big "MEH" typical happy Hollywood ending which taint the whole film and don't let it be crude and honest as it's set to from the start. Why I say that? Because all the plot circles around Butler and Fox, with Butler wanting to give Fox a lesson for being a mediocre attorney and don't seel real justice. Problem is? Butler basically punish the whole cast except Fox specifically since Jamie's Fox character is the main reason Butler go ballistic in the first place for not giving Butler justice and closure in his family crime. A better ending would have been Butler punishing Fox as well either taking his wife or girl life so Fox character can experience itself the penance of an injustice done to him now. That's why the movie is nearly perfect 👌🏻. Whatever it's still a must see 3/5 🍿 THE FINAL IS JUST BAD and I BET it's because the Director didn't want a color family murdered...lol just bad direction...
