The film is a historical reenactment of events leading up to September 27-30, 1943, four days during World War II when the people of Naples rose up against the Germans. The Neapolitans believe an armistice with the Allies has been signed and the war is at an end, only to realize that the Nazis are still in control and as ruthless as ever. Armed with makeshift weapons, the oppressed fight against their oppressors -- and overwhelming odds -- and drive the Germans from their city.

Geoffrey Nowell-Smith Sight & Sound Four Days of Naples is in almost all respects indistinguishable from so many other similar films on similar themes. Feb 11, 2020 Full Review Bosley Crowther New York Times It was certainly designed by [Loy] to make the older people of Italy feel again the fire of courage they felt in those dark moments, and to make the younger people know what it was. There isn't the slightest question that it accomplishes this intent. Audience Member The Rotten Tomato synopsis is incorrect. The Movie depicts an actual event. The Italians had surrendered and switched sides [several nations did this in WW2 including Finland and Rumania] the Italian Army without orders was at odds and breaking up. The Germans ordered a round-up of all young men in Naples to take them to Germany for slave labor. The Germans also determined to destroy Naples' harbor. In answer to the round up many rose up. Deserting Italian Soldiers, police, resistance leaders, and especially the young street kids began ambushing the Germans and freeing the prisoners. The Germans after four days came to an agreement and left without the attendant destruction, many of the prisoners were freed, few ended up in Germany because of the uprising. Naples claims to be the only city in Europe to have freed itself. Of course the Allied Army was approaching but hey it was a brave four days. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member I've read Rotten Tomatoes caption about the film: I disagree. When watching the film at no point did I sense that the Italians were distancing themselves from their (or Mussolini's) ally, Nazi Germany. This movie is based on FACT: what you see is precisely what happened in Naples. History, Italy's and even America's, is often not neat and simple. But the truth is still the truth.
