Richard Brody New Yorker The director, Max Ophüls, reshapes the material with his distinctive blend of visual genius and bitter, worldly wisdom. Aug 3, 2015 Full Review Fernando F. Croce Slant Magazine Le Plaisir illustrates not merely Ophüls's unparalleled sense of flow and texture, but also his proto-feminism. Rated: 4/4 Nov 3, 2005 Full Review Victor Pineyro Seventh Art Studio The film has a spectacular starting monologue and a few recognizable and revolutionary camera movements, but beyond that it struggles to pull through a recognizable narrative surrounding pleasure, without narrating it all. Audience Member It never struggles in its transitions through each separate story, it actually gets better as it goes and the last one of the three being the most fitting for the end. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Most of the film is taken up by the second of its three stories, a far more complicated and detailed story than the other two, and on its own, it's a masterpiece, one of the best things Ophüls has ever done. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member didn't really liker this one the only Max Ophul pic I don't like year s/b 1952 not 1999 Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member One more time, the camera becomes an intangible character, neutral as Maupassant's enchanting vision of the irrationality of pleasure our multiple emotional deviations, but powerful as well; it is a sublime conqueror of spaces that dances around the cinematic rhythm of the protagonists that share the same impulse: plaisir. Wonderful nocturne and multicolored landscapes illuminate the delicacy of the three tales; at some point, it seemed like Öphuls was screaming for a chance to make a film in color. Thank God, he achieved that with his last feature. 99/100 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member syxi-love@hotmail.com Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member I've seen it and it is so fun! Definitely a film to see alone or with others that appreciate art and sensuality in their films. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
