      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Leave No Trace takes an effectively low-key approach to a potentially sensationalistic story -- and further benefits from brilliant work by Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie.

John C AMC at Times Square had the wrong movie. I went to see a movie with Ben Foster, but they showed a Boys Scout documentary instead... It was interesting but it's not what I intended to go see or what was advertised. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/18/22 Full Review Audience Member Such a great movie. Felt authentic and real. It’s crazy how people live off the grid like that. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/09/24 Full Review William B Not that great to me Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/24 Full Review Jake Stunning!!! In its simplicity, its acting and its direction. Where was its Oscar nomination??? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/14/24 Full Review Gini B This naturalistic wilderness drama about the very special relationship between a traumatized father and his fun-loving daughter is a convincing, quietly humanistic coming-of-age film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/14/24 Full Review Don M With the high positive reviews I was expecting a good movie, however I have to agree with all those who found it long and boring! Claudia Puig FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) [Director Debra Granik] focuses on the humanity of the characters without ever judging them. Dec 14, 2019 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald Granik's star-making instincts are as sharp as ever. Rated: 4/5 Sep 14, 2018 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review I loved this film. Aug 28, 2018 Full Review Ryan McQuade InSession Film Both performances are superbly acted by Foster and McKenzie, with McKenzie being the shining star. This is expected in Granik’s films now... Rated: A Apr 3, 2024 Full Review Robert Roten Laramie Movie Scope The writing and direction by Debra Granik is sharp and sure. This has the lean, spare look of a low-budget independent film, but it is emotionally rich and powerful. Rated: B Mar 21, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “Leave No Trace” struck a chord with me early, and I could feel its emotional tug all the way till the end. It’s not a movie deeply concerned with plot. Instead it is all about character. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 23, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews
