What to Know

Critics Consensus

Leave No Trace takes an effectively low-key approach to a potentially sensationalistic story -- and further benefits from brilliant work by Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie.

Claudia Puig FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) [Director Debra Granik] focuses on the humanity of the characters without ever judging them. Dec 14, 2019 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald Granik's star-making instincts are as sharp as ever. Rated: 4/5 Sep 14, 2018 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review I loved this film. Aug 28, 2018 Full Review Bianca Garner Filmotomy The build-up to this climax is slow but is masterfully done without being too sentimental, and Granik seems to understand how to deliver an emotional moment without being manipulative. Oct 11, 2024 Full Review JD Duran InSession Film Foster and McKenzie not only give great individual performances, but their chemistry together is stunning and it made for an emotional experience that few movies matched in 2018. Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Brittany Patrice Witherspoon Pop Culture Reviews The beauty of it all is while the characters find any means necessary to erase their existence from the world, they will surely find a way to creep into and leave a trace in your heart. John C AMC at Times Square had the wrong movie. I went to see a movie with Ben Foster, but they showed a Boys Scout documentary instead... It was interesting but it's not what I intended to go see or what was advertised. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/18/22 Full Review Les N So sad. Great movie. I recommend it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/13/24 Full Review JUSTIN DON CORLEONE A fantastic cinematic masterpiece of simplicity about survival connection extremely important but sometimes forgotten connection between nature and people and the utmost importance of home. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/07/24 Full Review Victoria S This film has no bells and whistles it is all about the characters, story and acting. The story is both beautiful and heartbreaking. It had me glued from beginning to end. The simplicity of the cinematography was captivating and very well thought out. Leave no Trace was emotive I smiled felt anger and cried. It highlights the constructs that are forced on people that are a circle being forced into a square hole. I would highly recommend. Now I’m off to listen to the book! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/05/24 Full Review Georgina W I hated this movie, the plot was confusing and the acting was horrid. Do not recommend. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/09/24 Full Review Joy F *Leave No Trace* (2018) offers a beautiful look at life off the grid, showing how living close to nature can be peaceful and fulfilling. I liked this aspect of the film, as it highlights the simplicity of such a lifestyle. However, the ending really disappointed me. The father, Will, leaves his daughter, Tom, which felt selfish. He can’t seem to sacrifice even a bit of his freedom for her, despite knowing she wants more stability. It was heartbreaking to see him choose his own desires over her well-being, making the ending feel unsatisfying and frustrating. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/07/24 Full Review Read all reviews
