Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com It’s the closest thing that Tsui will make to a Marvel movie. Big emotions exchanged by larger-than-life characters conceived on a big enough scale that it occasionally eclipses its ungainly plot’s hard emotional core. Rated: 2.5/4 Feb 21, 2025 Full Review Matt McCracken In Review Online The film does manage to impress in a limited sense in terms of the action-oriented, spectacular CGI...and the...melodramatics may land for some viewers. But neither is adept enough to salvage a blockbuster that was destined from conception to disappoint. Feb 28, 2025 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine It does not quite match the director at his very best, but even second-string Tsui represents a solid night out at the movies. Rated: 7/10 Feb 25, 2025 Full Review Maxance Vincent InSession Film One can’t argue that he has forever changed the landscape of modern action cinema and has redefined the artistic qualities of a genre that, before he showed the world what he was capable of, was labeled as nothing more than “popcorn entertainment.” Rated: B- Feb 25, 2025 Full Review Peter Martin ScreenAnarchy When a film rips like this, ranking films is the last thing that will be on any viewer's mind. It's rousing entertainment in the grand old style. Feb 23, 2025 Full Review Casey Chong Casey's Movie Mania Tsui Hark's middling return to the wuxia genre. Heather The film beautifully portrays the grandeur and depth of its iconic characters, especially the heroism of Guo Jing, who exemplifies the ideal of loyalty, honor, and selflessness. The breathtaking choreography of the martial arts scenes is nothing short of spectacular, skillfully blending action with emotional depth. The cinematography is stunning, with sweeping landscapes and intricate set designs that transport the audience to the world of ancient China. The performances are powerful, with each actor bringing a unique strength to their character, particularly the remarkable chemistry between Guo Jing and Huang Rong. Overall, it’s a masterful adaptation that celebrates the timeless themes of love, loyalty, and bravery. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/14/25 Full Review TIM C Another must-see instant classic by Director Tsui Hark--especially when you're a Kung Fu fan or an avid reader of Jin Yong's novels, this is a fantastic treat & comes around once a decade. It's easily the best work of Tsui Hark's yet & quite possibly the best Jin Yong's novel brought to the big screen in recent memory. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/12/25 Full Review Frank The Gallants is a visually appealing wuxia film, especially for viewers who enjoy modern wuxia elements and special effects. The movie's visual effects are impressive, especially the design of the fight scenes, which blend traditional martial arts action with modern special effects technology, providing me with a fresh cinematic experience. The special effects and scene construction showcase a colorful wuxia world, depicting both the treacherous martial arts world and the heroic life of the characters. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/09/25 Full Review Amily the movie is a fantastic wuxia film of amazing jin yong story. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/09/25 Full Review T W Some whiz-bang action and rousing music, but the movie never every really lands any serious feeling. It speeds through so much plot and gives only surface-level treatment to too many characters and story threads. It also relies on miscommunication, missed connections, and other silly contrivances to generate drama. It’s fine, but could’ve been better Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/09/25 Full Review Tina Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants really brings out the growth of its hero and the true spirit of chivalry. It does this through some seriously exciting action scenes and a gripping storyline. Xiao Zhan, playing Guo Jing, faces all sorts of challenges but never loses sight of his values—he sticks to loyalty and justice no matter what. His performance is incredibly moving, and you really feel how Guo Jing is this loyal, brave, and righteous hero. Xiao Zhan nails the role perfectly. His natural acting makes Guo Jing feel more real and multi-dimensional, which really brings the character to life. The special effects and action sequences in the movie are also a huge highlight. The battle scenes are especially impressive, as the director, Hark Tsui, uses modern special effects to blend the fantasy of martial arts with the real world in a way that feels smooth and believable. The martial arts choreography is spot on, and the action moves at such a fast pace that you’re constantly on the edge of your seat. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/09/25 Full Review Read all reviews
