Synopsis
This impressionistic film reconstructs "The Middle Passage," the dangerous and cruel boat journey that transported slaves from Africa to the New World to be sold off. Narrator Maka Kotto provides the only dialogue, narrating from the perspective of a slave on a four-month voyage alongside 600 other people. The camera shows the filthy conditions below deck, from the cramped space to the rats, while dead bodies are regularly tossed overboard as the ship sails on.
