Ben Sachs Chicago Reader Despite being formally unusual, it's always emotionally accessible if not emotionally overwhelming. Jan 17, 2019 Full Review John DeFore Hollywood Reporter A welcome opportunity for Garrel's most fervent fans, but not an entry point for newbies. Oct 19, 2017 Full Review Glenn Kenny New York Times Part of Mr. Garrel's mastery is his ability to make expressive use of what would constitute dire technical flaws in other people's films. Oct 17, 2017 Full Review Budd Wilkins Film Journal International Philippe Garrel's brooding 1979 film charts the dissolution of a romance, as well as the birth of a new kind of narrative filmmaking. Audience Member A strange, mysterious love story with strong hints of silent film and home movies. Nothing ever makes that much sense, but then in doomed love what does? Maybe in the end the fragments and repetitions convey the reality of emotional turmoil better than a conventional narrative approach can. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member -LA SÉCTION CESARIENNE: Gentle, abandoned, faithful, seeking for the correct man that fills her void properly. -LE DERNIER GUERRIER: Battling against his own demons, a struggle with highs and lows, mental and physical casualties as distractions from his true self and from his opportunity to balance human relationships. -LE CERCLE ORPHYDIQUE: Cast out from their heavenly love, the couple reunite on a hellish earth, both now tormented by the same demon, in their attempt to balance things unsuccessfully. -LES FORÊTS DÉSENCHANTÉES: A fictional escapism starts to be created, but it isn't real; there is no fantasy. There are two options now: redemption or death (at least emotional). The importance of the acts is about being there, and not about how we got there except for the purpose of reflection. Rarely are we shown the transitions between one sequence and the next. 99/100 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
