Jordan Hoffman Times of Israel There's a level of maturity and realism to this story that is thrilling. G M This movie opens with the most private of Women’s ceremonies, the Mikvek, being filmed, but from the Male Gaze sexual point of view, as though the audience is all going to be males. We see a woman being disrobed behind gauze curtains, as though we are disgusting peeping Toms. The camera then cuts to an underwater shot of the woman's breasts, because of course this is not a Sacred Private Ritual moment for her with other women, but a moment for repulsive males to see what kind of a rack she has. The male gaze of the camera has never been more obvious, intrusive, inappropriate and repulsive. To try and bring Jane Austen's name into this story is nothing short of laughable. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/23/24 Full Review Cecilia A La mejor película mexicana que he visto en últimamente. Best Mexican movie in recent years. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/03/23 Full Review grammaester l This is the first time I truly believed people are paid to post reviews on sites. There is no way anyone other than the cast or crews family would think this deserved a 5 rating. I'm also questioning how the lead actress managed to get a best actress award from any organization. Spoilers: All that being said, it's not a terrible movie but one that's been done many times and much better. The star crossed lovers from different races, cultures, religions is overdone and should not be a consideration for a movie again unless aliens come to earth and begin mating. Nothing much happens in this movie. You begin with a shot of multiple Jewish women watching a soon to be new bride cleanse herself in the traditional bath before her wedding. Cut to our protagonist who is the rebel of the bunch who eschews nice Jewish men but is drawn to a Hispanic. Everything goes predictably, ie; her family basically disowns her and she initially capitulates by breaking up with said young man and dating a cluster of sad sack Jewish men. I hate to say this but if those men are representative of Jewish men, I am shocked so many women marry within the faith. Eventually she settles on a Jewish man to ostensibly marry but then ....... you can probably come up with two eventual endings and one will be correct. TBH the only thing that shocked me other than the representation of young Jewish men who were all bizarre, boring and men no woman would ever enthusiastically hook up with was that her family basically disowned her(they spoke to her but all refused to allow her to spend even one night at their home) even her grandmother. I mean I'm a grandmother and barring one of my grandkids murdering or raping someone, there is nothing they could do to make me refuse them spending the night. Unless you're doing your thesis on modern Jewish movies and their portrayal of Jewish men and families, you can skip this and watch the original West Side Story. You'll get the same gist but will have wonderful songs to listen to. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/12/23 Full Review Diego P I think it very accurately depicts the life of most Jewish women girls in Mexico City, and possibly anywhere in the world. I think the imagery, and the storyline are very beautiful. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Slow and boring, badly paced, Because the protagonist tries her best to keep it all together and the story it tries to tell is interesting and complicated I gave it 3* and not 1 or 2.
