As a movie it certainly had a few plot holes and inconsistencies. But hey, it's red dwarf! It transported me back to being 15 and watching the smegheads on bbc2 without my dads consent. Some great one liners and visual gags, plus some real groans. Dwarfers will love it, the uninitiated might scratch their heads.

Incredible! An original story, based on the original season 1 plot, well told and funny too! Had me laughing the entire way through, as well as a ton of nostalgic callbacks! 10 out of 10 must see! 👏

As good as ever, the "Boys from the Dwarf' are back in their latest feature length outing, with a link back to season 1. Superb, long may it continue.

Red Dwarf is a great show which rightly has earned its place as a classic of British comedy. Sadly, after 32 years, it remains hard for the show to tread new ground. Way back in 1993 the concept showed signs of repeating itself and while this special is amusing, is well written, directed and produced, it does in places feel like a bit of a greatest hits.
We've seen the Boys from the Dwarf in similar situations before, with similar conclusions. Tender moments between Lister and Rimmer play out skilfully, showing just how much the writer and the actors have developed over the years. However, the jokes and behaviours that might have endeared us to the Dave Lister in his 20s back in the 1990s - such as jokes about him being off his beer because he's down to 12 pints a day - become in equal measures cringeworthy and worrying when the character is clearly in his 50s.
One of the reasons Brent Spiner wanted to stop playing Data in Star Trek was, apparently, that he felt he could no longer physically pull off playing the Android. Unlike humans, Androids are in a fixed state. They do not get old in the same way that a person would, they do not suffer from middle-age drift or the ravages of good living around their jawline. However, actors do - and that's the problem with playing the same character over the best part of 32 years. You can focus on the performances sure, but when they don't seem to match the appearance of the actors, it starts to feel a bit like watching a Hollywood movie where a 40 year old actor is playing a high school teenager.
While this isn't bad, Red Dwarf does feel stuck in a time-warp. This outing isn't something that feels like must-watch TV, it's an amusing trip down memory lane, safe in the knowledge that there will be another special a few years down the line. Where absolutely nothing will have changed.

Very well filmed and good story, would have benefitted from less adverts, but great for a first time viewer as well as die hard fans

Enjoyed every minute of this. Red dwarf has hit it's stride again! Kept me laughing every minute of the way. It's like the old episodes but fresh and new. I could happily watch this over and over just like I do with my classic Red Dwarf boxsets. Looking forward to more like this from the boys from the dwarf!
