Audience Member A quiet and subtle character study of men who dress as women, Summer Nights is a great piece that doesn't judge or make assumptions, it just sits back and observes. There is a sensitivity to the film that is hard to come by from all involved, from the director to the performers. The French have a very matter of fact attitude towards the LGBTQ community, which is at the centre of what makes Summer Nights work. To reduce it simply to a film about crossdressing men is to do it a disservice, instead it is a film about a group of people who are often marginalized and misunderstood and why that is the case, while trying to give the uninitiated a glimpse into this world that is not as different as it may seem from the outside.
