Audience Member A strange film that’s conveyed in a dream-like state, I appreciated the bizarre storytelling but in the end, I found myself dissatisfied with the end results. If your a fan of strange, arguably pretentious French films, this is a film worth checking out Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member I am not going to bother even accurately summarizing this since it would take too long but: it has something to do with a revolutionary who uses the play Life is a Dream as device to remember the names of 15,000 militants. Having forgotten both the play and the names, years later he finds himself in a cinema trying to use bad b-movies as a device to remember the play and therefore the names once again. Or something like that. As the revolutionary begins to remember the play (I think) scenes from the various bad movies are conflated with it, culminating in the strange ending where the characters, dead, awaken from their dream life. However opaque and totally confusing the film gets, it remains fascinatingly watchable due to Ruiz's rich and excessively peculiar visual style. I'd have to watch this again before I could say anything more interesting about it, but as an exploration of cinema and memory (both personal and political) I can't think of anything else to compare it to.
