      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

It may not stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the best Elmore Leonard adaptations, but Life of Crime has enough ambling charm -- and a sharp enough cast -- to get by.

Jerod S For all that was going on in Leonard's original story, Life of Crime lands really flat. Anniston is sitting pretty in her holding room, and the action around her plods along. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/24/23 Full Review steve d I have never read this book but Elmore Leonard has a lot of great stuff. this is a total mess. I bet it's because of the adaptation. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member not sure why viewers don't like this. It was hilarious, quirky, and Aniston was great in it. Offbeat kidnap thriller with surprising wit laced all through it. Very entertaining and smartly written. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Loved it. A smart little comedy with witty dialogue and great acting. No gratuitous violence and a lot of suspense made this a must watch movie for me. Not sure why it has such a low rating. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member I don't understand the bad reviews for this movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review torin f There are many good ingredients here---talented cast, funny premise, Elmore Leonard source material---but somehow it all adds up to little more than boring and forgettable mush. Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald The script is a nice mixture of suspense and black comic bumbling about. Rated: 3/5 Sep 22, 2014 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) The meagre charms of the first act are soon squandered as this descends into straight-to-video stodge, progressing inexorably to a depressing climax. The book was better. Rated: 2/5 Sep 7, 2014 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) This is a droll and well-observed comedy thriller that recreates the 1970s in convincing fashion while retaining enough of a sense of menace to avoid ever drifting off into whimsy. Rated: 4/5 Sep 5, 2014 Full Review Angus Batey NME (New Musical Express) Jennifer Aniston shines as the confused but composed hostage... Rated: 4/5 May 18, 2021 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse A slickly made but blandish adaptation of Elmore Leonard's novel The Switch. As usual Leonard's bad guys are more interesting than the straights. The trick here is figuring out who the bad guys are. Rated: 3/5 Feb 1, 2021 Full Review Debbie Lynn Elias Behind The Lens [O]ne of the most, if not the most, faithful to the source material of all the [Elmore] Leonard adaptations...true to the stylized dialogue and wit of the novel itself. Life of Crime is as witty and wonderful on the big screen as on the page. Dec 14, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews
