Critics Consensus

A pleasant and innocuous diversion for kids, but adults may have trouble sitting through the movie's predictable plotlines and schmaltz.

I loved it as a kid and just re-discovered it. The acting is pretty terrible but it’s light-hearted, so honestly who cares. See more Mar 19 Alright, so I sat down to watch this so-called sports movie, Like Mike, thinking, "Hey, maybe it's about some kid finding an old pair of Mike Bossy’s skates and lighting up the ice like a young Gretzky." But NOPE. Turns out, it’s about basketball—the least hockey-like sport out there. The plot? Some kid named Calvin Cambridge (Lil’ Bow Wow—great name, by the way) finds a pair of old sneakers, gets struck by lightning or something, and suddenly he’s dunking on full-grown NBA players. Sorry, but if magic shoes are a thing, how come I’ve been sharpening my skates for 20 years and still can’t go top shelf on a beer-league goalie? WHERE’S MY FAIRYTALE, EH?! And let’s talk about realism—or lack thereof. This kid is what? 4-foot-nothing? And he’s out here pulling off windmill dunks? C’mon. That’s like saying a minor-leaguer could put on Gretzky’s old Jofa helmet and suddenly dangle like McDavid. No chance, buddy. Not to mention, not one good hit in the entire movie. No elbows, no cross-checks, not even a casual chirp in the post-game presser! What kind of “sports” film is this?! If you tried to make a hockey movie without at least one line brawl, we’d riot in the streets. Also, no Tim Hortons cameos. No references to pond hockey. No penalty box drama. Not even a single Molson in sight. Absolute joke. Final verdict? If you like basketball, magic, and movies where literally nobody gets hit into the boards, then sure, maybe you’ll enjoy this. But if you’re a true Canadian looking for grit, heart, and a good ol’ fashioned scrap, do yourself a favour and throw on Slap Shot instead. Rating: 1.5 out of 5 Molsons. 🍁🏀 (Half a Molson deducted for lack of enforcers.)
