Audience Member A frighteningly wafer-thin and ill-tempered Cecilia Cheung gives compliant poet Louis Koo a hard time in Joe Ma's costume trifle The Lion Roars. Ma might possibly and quite seriously be arguing for female emancipation and gender equity with Cheung's strong and iconically irrepressible character, but by lacing this rather drawn-out domestic dramedy with some pretty weak and generic comedy, he misses the target by miles. Ma's work is always appreciable in one way or another, however, and The Lion Roars works admirably in the later, more serious reels. But by then, most audiences might already have lost their faith in Cheung's and Koo's characters due to the weird pacing and irrational shifts in tone.
