Christian Zilko indieWire The film’s determination to shed light on systemic causes of dementia is admirable, but the real takeaway of Little Empty Boxes is that caring for a parent in a state of serious decline is an impossible task. Perla Grigg Max Lugavere's 'Little Empty Boxes' hits you right in the feels. It's a heartfelt documentary about his luchadora (fighter) of a mami, Kathy, as she battles a mysterious kind of dementia. Mami Kathy's world starts to slip through her fingers, and Max dives in cabeza primero (head first) to understand this illness. He talks to doctors, busca (seeks) answers beyond pills, and wonders if what they eat might be playing a part. The film is a cruda y desgarradora (raw and heartbreaking) look at Mami Kathy's journey, the struggles of being a cuidador (caregiver), and the fierce love of a son who just wants to help his mami hold onto what she has left. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/03/24 Full Review Laura R Moving, informative, heart-breaking yet life-affirming. The film-makers set out to not just document (beautifully) one experience, but to help educate the viewer on preventing diseases of the brain. We all have something to learn about the changing science landscape surrounding dementia. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/04/24 Full Review Steve G A heart-breakingly beautiful journey of the mind and spirit. Max takes us on a personal educational journey of dementia of a parent, what causes it, and how to live a healthy life to reduce your chances of getting it. It is a courageous and open documentary that beautifully shows the progressing dimentia story in a compassionate narrative. Moreover, it is an extraodinary example of how family comes together around a life changing event with love and support - the sacrifices, the weight, moments of connection and dialogs of a lifetime. May we all have a Max in our lives if our world as we know it ever starts to slip away from us. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/30/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
