Bob S Recommended conditionally. A truly disturbing movie about one semi-sociopathic boy and an acting-out girl who gets the boy's hormones racing, to terrible effect. The filmmaker seems to blame most of this bad behavior on success-oriented parents, who are self-absorbed and disappointed and sometimes cruel, and who are having problematic relationships themselves. But the situation is aggravated by the boy's social network, to which he has become addicted, and which urges him on, some of them meaning to be helpful and some of them just jerking him around, and all of them playing on his dependence because it is powerful to be able to manipulate someone else this way. To the movie's credit, the boy does not escape his share of "blame" for his situation.... The movie also displays the over-power of the social network, and the boundaries it can cross, resulting in an almost total lack of privacy. The movie might be asking the question: would a total lack of privacy be more honest, and avoid the secrets and games of old-fashioned human relationships. Shouldn't we all be informationally naked to one another? We'd still be bruised and battered by people, but it would be more truthful? On the other hand, the movie also shows how anything can be faked by the social network, if it were to choose to do so -- so is truth really being enhanced? More complicated than the classic Rebel Without a Cause, and interesting enough to keep us watching, but the sociopathic character of the boy is unnerving, not to mention the power of the social network.
