Noel Murray The Dissolve There's a boldness in Eggleston's choice to let almost the entire last half-hour play out without dialogue, and in the clever ways they illustrate the couple's dangerous callousness. Rated: 3.5/5 May 4, 2015 Full Review Dennis Harvey 48 Hills This memorably stark, ambiguous parable follows a noxious Australian yuppie couple who decide to glamp in the countryside. Jul 29, 2024 Full Review Paul Lê Bloody Disgusting Long Weekend asks the audience to follow its lead, take in the scenery, and, most of all, ponder the consequences of abusing nature. Rated: 4/5 Jul 20, 2023 Full Review Casey Chong Casey's Movie Mania Eggleston's direction is surprisingly tense and engaging while the late great Ozploitation writer Everett De Roche's minimalist screenplay speaks volumes in term of its psychological and environmental subtexts. Rated: 5/5 Apr 14, 2020 Full Review John Brosnan Starburst The director, Colin Eggleston, is a new name to me but on the basis of this picture alone one can see he's a film maker of considerable talent. Wayne K As someone who lived in Australia for close to 2 years, films set in the country have held a greater significance for me since then. I’m especially enamoured with films of the Ozploitation subgenre, such as Roadgames, Wake In Fright, Wolf Creek & The Mad Max series. Long Weekend is part of that grand tradition, and more than any of the aforementioned movies, it focuses on the wild nature of Australia. It’s a lush and beautiful nation but has more things that can and will kill you than anywhere else on earth, and Long Weekend is all about nature and its retribution on humanity. The leads are both despicable in their own way, but its their transgressions against the planet itself that are punished. It certainly has the trademark features of a folk horror film, where the enemy isn’t something you can bargain with or even really understand, but you’ll be punished for your sins nevertheless. There’s a constantly encroaching sense of dread, emphasised by quick cuts, stark imagery and a sparse but effective musical score. It’s not an easy watch, especially if you happen to be an animal lover. The puppetry is clunky at times, but I’ll take bad practical effects over bad CGI any day. If you want a film that both demonstrates the rawness of the Australian wilderness and the sheer power of the country’s cinematic output, then Long Weekend is an absolute must see. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/07/24 Full Review Fiona L I saw this film a very long time ago. I'm 56yr old now and I watched this when I was a teenager. The film is very very unnerving. It stuck in my head enough to search for it years later. Definitely recommend this film, you don't see much like it these days Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Those ozzies are nuts! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Respect nature. Its message is maybe too blatant, but it's very entertaining to watch this couple have some nasty fights and then get picked on by mother nature. The claustrophobia, for lack of a better term, of being alone in the middle of nowhere, is effectively realized here. And for what is essentially a horror-suspense film, the drama at its core, between the couple, is surprisingly well done. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member An overlooked Aussie thriller that has a better premise than the execution. It is still a lot of fun and provides some great tension. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/23/20 Full Review a.l.jude p Stephen King must have missed this by a whisker ! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
