Inspired by true events, Los Frikis is a powerful coming-of-age story set in early 90s Cuba, centering around 18-year-old Gustavo who idolizes his older brother Paco and his punk, "Frikis" bandmates. When word reaches the Frikis of a potential reprieve from the effects of the economic crisis that plunged much of the country into poverty, they do the now unthinkable: self-inject themselves with HIV to live at a government-run treatment home. It's here they find their own utopia to live and play music freely.

Carlos Aguilar Variety Rather than simplistically lionizing the frikis, the directors honor their plight by portraying them as an example of how the human spirit perseveres even when nearly crushed. Dec 21, 2024 Full Review David Ehrlich indieWire A movie that renders the scarcity of post-Soviet Havana with unflinching detail... But “Los Frikis” is also a movie that contrives to elide that bleakness with a sentimental and hard-to-swallow plot. Rated: B- Dec 18, 2024 Full Review Giovanni Lago Next Best Picture Where "Los Frikis" does stand out in comparison to other coming-of-age films is in Nilson and Scharwtz's dedication to finding Cuban actors who lend authenticity to a story that is approached with a sensitivity that is more than appreciated. Rated: 6/10 Dec 20, 2024 Full Review Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue This gritty and evocative Cuban coming-of-age drama infuses an edgy tale of punk-rock rebellion with heartfelt humanity. Dec 20, 2024 Full Review Stephen Saito Moveable Fest As “Los Frikis” settles into a rhythm where [its characters] can finally feel comfortable in their own skin, the film becomes just as much of a pleasure for those off screen as on. Dec 19, 2024 Full Review Sean Boelman FandomWire It’s not often that you find a movie as unabashedly warm-hearted as this, and hopefully it gets the platform it deserves, as this story needs to be heard.
