Raw yet rewarding, Lost Girls overcomes uneven storytelling with powerful performances and a willingness to resist easy catharsis.

John Doyle Globe and Mail Low-key and frank about Mari's failings, the movie has no interest in sensationalizing the daughter's life and fate. It is a mystery, but also a rich portrait of life in gloomy, working-class Long Island. Jul 30, 2020 Full Review Karen Han Polygon Luckily, [Liz] Garbus' direction helps keep the visible parts of the film compelling. Mar 16, 2020 Full Review Kristy Puchko Pajiba By veering into the humanity of this story, Garbus is able to express the horror without getting too ghoulish. Mar 14, 2020 Full Review Greg Carlson Vague Visages The lack of resolution inherent in the source material sets up an insurmountable task: the solution to the central crime and mystery that puts this particular story in motion. Sep 22, 2023 Full Review M.N. Miller Ready Steady Cut Award-winning filmmaker Liz Garbus’s first scripted feature is a film that is hard to recommend or disregard. Lost Girls would have been better suited as a documentary film. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 27, 2022 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “Lost Girls” is a gritty, clear-eyed look at a mother’s pain, regret, fury, and persistence. Gareth v Okay. Rather straight forward storytelling that is let down by it's uneveness despite an excellent performance from Amy Ryan. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/25/24 Full Review Audience Member Could be better. Still good. Sad movie, but not crying sad, just sad story. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/11/24 Full Review Audience Member Basic movie but good, went by quick which means it didn’t drag. Based on true story which I always find more intriguing. Unfortunate ending. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/23/24 Full Review Jeff M The sheer power and timeliness of the subject matter, based on a true story, leads me to give this a lukewarm recommendation despite my reservations. Cinematically, it's nothing more than an extended episode of a LAW AND ORDER or CSI type of show. All of the production elements are TV-movie level. Ryan is probably one of the best and most underrated actresses working today, but I'm afraid I don't think she was the right choice for this role. She gives it her all, and this is somewhat reminiscent of her Oscar nominated performance in GONE BABY GONE, but she just doesn't feel authentic to me. Despite the incendiary material this movie tackles, I don't feel any passion in the filmmaking. It just feels like a workmanlike, watchable movie that'll keep you interested for a couple hours but you likely won't remember in a week. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review Winning C I found it unrealistic and obvious acting, in comparison to many other fantastic real life dramas I have watched. However interesting and compelling due to it being a true story. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/24 Full Review Erin H It took a few months to realize Rex Huermann appears to be the girls' killer. I'm so glad the families can have some closure now. It's sad the mother featured in this film was murdered by her other daughter, who has schizophrenia. In honor of these new findings, I'm going to re-watch this movie tonight, with the knowledge that these cases will be officially solved soon.
