John Doyle Globe and Mail 07/30/2020
Low-key and frank about Mari's failings, the movie has no interest in sensationalizing the daughter's life and fate. It is a mystery, but also a rich portrait of life in gloomy, working-class Long Island. Go to Full Review

Luckily, [Liz] Garbus' direction helps keep the visible parts of the film compelling. Go to Full Review

By veering into the humanity of this story, Garbus is able to express the horror without getting too ghoulish. Go to Full Review

The lack of resolution inherent in the source material sets up an insurmountable task: the solution to the central crime and mystery that puts this particular story in motion. Go to Full Review

Award-winning filmmaker Liz Garbus’s first scripted feature is a film that is hard to recommend or disregard. Lost Girls would have been better suited as a documentary film. Go to Full Review

Igor S @Igor_Sena Jun 14 This is a very tragic story. Ihad heard about these murders a few years ago, but didn't knew anything about it. If this is how it all went in real life, the police were extremely incompetent or corrupt; maybe both. Either that or the director didn't do a good job at laying the events out. In terms of the movie: i wish i could say it's a good one, but it was a bit boring. But again, i don't much about the case or what material they had to work with. Sometimes that's just how life happens. If that was the case, and the director left it faithful to the events, all credit. I wish that with criminal investigation advancements in overall tools at their disposal, they could catch the killer in real life. The families deserve it. See more Ted B. @Movieaddicted Jun 8 4.0 stars; My expectation for this film was your basic hero mom, whose daughter goes missing, single-handedly doing all the detective work to find her missing daughter. It was nothing like that.. This was a true-life crime, docudrama about the Long Island Serial Killer investigation. It's a true story about how the mom of a missing young girl initiated the police investigation because of the lack of support given by the police. This film is raw, but at the same time compelling. There are no real heroes in this story. All parties had their serious flaws. The strong acting performances given by all the players keeps you so engaged creating a realism. This film left me moved and emotionally drained. It was a very well done 'message' motion picture. See more Aluna U @RT14704568 Aug 31 *Lost Girls* focuses on the emotional struggles of families affected by a true unsolved serial murder case, emphasizing Mari’s painful search for her missing daughter and critique of police failures. The film prioritizes personal turmoil over investigative details, delivering a powerful and heartfelt narrative. Strong performances, especially by Amy Ryan, deepen the impact, making it a sobering and compelling real-life crime drama.
