      Critics Consensus

Clumsily directed and missing most of the TV series' campy charm, Lost in Space sadly lives down to its title.

Brett J This movie was made for me when I was 13. It is such a time capsule of the feeling of scifi for that time. Fans of the fifth element might enjoy this film. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/15/24 Full Review Red T The acting is terrible. No one has any chemistry, Oldman feels like a James Bond villain out of place, the dialogue alternates between being terrible and flat out boring plot expose. The humor is terrible also. The music is the best thing and that's saying a lot. It's boring, generic, and forgettable most of the time. Everything else is as terrible as the acting. The CGI is horrible and laughably dated, Oversaturated, and some scenes are bordering on Mortal Kombat Annihilation bad like Oldman as the Spider Robot and the Monkey. This alternates between terrible CGI action scenes and boring lifeless plot expose. I know the spider was important but it feels like the 20 minute spider ship could've been cut. This feels like it's 20 minutes too long. Add in some dumb plot twists that are very confusing near the end. I can't recommend this to anyone. This sucks. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/01/23 Full Review Greta family movie to watch with lots of action and spaceships! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/31/23 Full Review Richard L An absolute mess of a movie with nauseating cinematography and a story that's all over the place and barely makes sense even by 90s standards. Character interactions are extremely inorganic due to the terrible script, and none of the admittedly amazing cast is able to elevate the material. Loved it when I was a teenager though. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/01/23 Full Review Shioka O Watched to see the professional villain played by Oldman. Surprised to see this nearly 25 years old CGI quality retains relatively interesting. It has some retro style. After all, I totally lost what happened in this. Ending is especially meh. Desson Thomson Washington Post A galactic slump of a movie that stuffs its travel bag with special effects but forgets to pack the charm. Sep 17, 2014 Full Review Joe Morgenstern Wall Street Journal After seeing Lost in Space, my first impulse was to say that it had been made by a bunch of sorcerers' apprentices who didn't know how to tell a story with their high-tech tools. But why give apprenticeship a bad name? Sep 17, 2014 Full Review Jami Bernard New York Daily News The new robot is a disappointment. Instead of the endearingly low-tech fireplug of yore that warned Will Robinson of encroaching danger, the new machine is all bells and whistles and no fun at all. Kinda like the movie itself. Rated: 2/4 Sep 17, 2014 Full Review Wesley Lovell Cinema Sight The film easily plays on its title, because the acting, plot and many other aspects are truly “Lost in Space.” Rated: 1.5/4 Nov 23, 2022 Full Review Gary Thompson Philadelphia Daily News Lost in Space glides along smoothly on special effects and punchy editing. At about the one-hour mark, however, the movie abandons itself to the noise, chaos and empty spectacle of the new-style Hollywood blockbuster, where story ceases to matter. Rated: C Sep 17, 2014 Full Review Leah Rozen People Magazine These Robinsons should have gone into therapy, not space. Sep 17, 2014 Full Review Read all reviews
