What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Lost World demonstrates how far CG effects have come in the four years since Jurassic Park; unfortunately, it also proves how difficult it can be to put together a truly compelling sequel.

Jay Boyar Orlando Sentinel Like the original, the sequel is uneven, sometimes moving in fits and starts. But the new film never really loses its momentum, and its big set pieces deliver. Rated: 5/5 Jun 30, 2025 Full Review Jami Bernard New York Daily News There's not much story or character development here, but you don't need that when you've got dynamite dinosaurs of all stripes and appetites. Rated: 3/4 Jun 30, 2025 Full Review Jay Carr Boston Globe It's sheer claptrap, but it's lively claptrap, with Spielberg skillfully reaching into his bag of shameless tricks to reinvent the chase movie and the cliffhanger. Jun 30, 2025 Full Review Todd Lothery News & Observer (Raleigh, NC) Visually and thematically darker than its precursor, The Lost World is canned entertainment. It lacks the wonder of the first film, perhaps an inevitability. What's more of a letdown is that it lacks the first one's heart. Rated: 1.5/4 Jun 30, 2025 Full Review Sean P. Means Salt Lake Tribune The Lost World: Jurassic Park, like its predecessor, combines gee-whiz effects with old-fashioned shots to the nervous system. Ooh and ahh all you want -- just get ready for the running and screaming. Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 30, 2025 Full Review Linda Cook Quad City Times (Davenport, IA) You literally see these creatures breathe, and the performances are so wonderful that it's hard to believe that the prehistoric brutes really are computer-generated. The Wandering D A very enjoyable entry into the franchise. I hadn’t seen this movie in about 10 years. Love Jeff Goldblum! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/17/25 Full Review Misty B I mean I get what they were trying to do but it just didn't work out for the most part dont get me wrong it's still a good movie but It didn't capture the OG magic like they were wanting it to, plot was all over the place but other then that it was alright. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/13/25 Full Review Kári Leó Ó I always have a good time watching a dinosaur movie and it was weird seeing Malcolm being serious but it is a little boring and I love the raptor scene Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/12/25 Full Review Tyler G Contains none of the wonder, suspense and humor of the first Jurassic Park. The third act of the movie takes a bizarre turn. The story is convoluted to say the least. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/12/25 Full Review Audience Member It's a pretty good movie I mean with some stupid characters but the new part of the story is just ok and the action is how it's a good one Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/12/25 Full Review chris m lack of the original realism. 'the lost world: jurassic park' begins with an opening scene that effectively establishes the central threat. this direct start is well executed, as it doesn’t delay in showing the audience the inherent danger, setting a brisk pace from the outset. narratively, the story largely repeats the saga’s core premise, with some changes that fail to bring enough freshness or convincing justification. the idea of building a dinosaur park after the traumatic events of the first film feels less credible and more forced in this installment. characterization and chemistry among the cast do not reach the depth and charisma that defined the original film. although jeff goldblum naturally reprises his role with charm, the rest of the cast lacks the strength needed to fully engage the audience. julianne moore brings a refreshing presence but cannot entirely compensate for this shortfall. technically, the film shows a decline compared to its predecessor. while the dinosaurs are well designed, they appear less realistic and their movements feel more artificial, which diminishes visual immersion. the overall atmosphere also lacks the visual impact that made the first movie memorable. humor is one of the most positive aspects of this sequel. it is present in the dialogues and character interactions, even including some ironic touches related to the dinosaurs. while this lightness adds dynamism, at times it becomes excessive and can overwhelm the narrative. finally, the movie relies too heavily on unlikely coincidences, which undermines its credibility. however, the brief appearance of a dinosaur in an urban setting adds an interesting element, and the ending leaves the door open for a continuation, balancing familiar elements with some novelties. in conclusion, 'the lost world: jurassic park' is a sequel that, although lacking the impact and freshness of its predecessor, offers moments of entertainment thanks to its humor and certain attractive ideas. however, its narrative inconsistency and technical decline make it a more uneven proposition, recommended mainly for those who enjoy the jurassic universe without expecting the excellence that defined the original film.
