What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Lost World demonstrates how far CG effects have come in the four years since Jurassic Park; unfortunately, it also proves how difficult it can be to put together a truly compelling sequel.

Jay Boyar Orlando Sentinel Like the original, the sequel is uneven, sometimes moving in fits and starts. But the new film never really loses its momentum, and its big set pieces deliver. Rated: 5/5 Jun 30, 2025 Full Review Jami Bernard New York Daily News There's not much story or character development here, but you don't need that when you've got dynamite dinosaurs of all stripes and appetites. Rated: 3/4 Jun 30, 2025 Full Review Jay Carr Boston Globe It's sheer claptrap, but it's lively claptrap, with Spielberg skillfully reaching into his bag of shameless tricks to reinvent the chase movie and the cliffhanger. Jun 30, 2025 Full Review Todd Lothery News & Observer (Raleigh, NC) Visually and thematically darker than its precursor, The Lost World is canned entertainment. It lacks the wonder of the first film, perhaps an inevitability. What's more of a letdown is that it lacks the first one's heart. Rated: 1.5/4 Jun 30, 2025 Full Review Sean P. Means Salt Lake Tribune The Lost World: Jurassic Park, like its predecessor, combines gee-whiz effects with old-fashioned shots to the nervous system. Ooh and ahh all you want -- just get ready for the running and screaming. Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 30, 2025 Full Review Linda Cook Quad City Times (Davenport, IA) You literally see these creatures breathe, and the performances are so wonderful that it's hard to believe that the prehistoric brutes really are computer-generated. Beb S. An absolute cult classic Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/18/25 Full Review Seth K. It’s really good but not all good Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/11/25 Full Review Aiden Z. This movie had shown many dinosaurs around and I like it even the cast members where good the actions and the kills were great got thriller. The settings have been good taking from Isla Sorna and san Diego were good having a rampage was a great thing I’ve ever seen. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/07/25 Full Review Owen K An absolute masterclass in suspense and tension. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/05/25 Full Review Caleb V. For a sequel to Jurassic Park, this ain’t half bad. I mean sure, characters like Sarah Harding and Kelly are hard to root for, as well as Ian Malcolm being transformed from a charismatic people pleaser with a self-awareness regarding oneself to a nonchalant, neurotic, deadbeat dad, the pacing being a absolute slog to sit through (the 1st act alone is 40 minutes), and that whole San Diego bit being insanely stupid and ridiculous, especially with how the T-Rex managed to eat everybody on the ship without leaving a singular trace regarding its presence. The editing sometimes as well is really haphazard; the scene where Kelly dispatches a Velociraptor. We’ll get to that in a bit. However, the effects are still pretty solid. The computer generated effects are a bit sloppy, especially the raptors, but the animatronic work is thankfully up to snuff from the original; looking breathtakingly convincing to this day. Some of the characters manage to be likable like Eddie Carr, Nick Van Owen, and especially Roland Tembo and his team of hunters. Pete Postlethwaite gives a great performance as this character; in fact the cast in general is great, providing a charm to their characters, even at their worst. Peter Ludlow is probably the only underwhelming character; just your typical businessman who’s only interested in the money and nothing more. Okay I lied, there is something about wanting to continue Hammond’s dream of a dinosaur park, instead this time being on the mainland, not at a disclosed island. I love how the dinosaurs take center stage in this movie; their ecology and behavioral mannerisms being what the movie thematically hinges on and it’s legit really cool. I especially like the parallels of the relationship between Ian and Kelly and the T-Rex family. However, it doesn’t really come to any sort of payoff, with the exception of a really stupid scene regarding gymnastics; Kelly drop-kicks a raptor out a window, saving Ian’s life. I don’t even have the words for that bit. The score from John Williams is actually pretty awesome; a real percussive sound that drives the soundtracks, particularly during action scenes. That and the minimal use of the musically themes from the first are pretty clever as the wonder of the park is pretty much gone; can’t really blame the writers for that. Tim and Lex make a cameo for 30 seconds despite being a major thing in the first movie. Simply put, the passionate direction from Spielberg and the visual aesthetic of the film, being much darker and gloomy, pretty much saves the film from being a low-tier monster movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/03/25 Full Review Matt N 🤦‍♂️Halfway into this and characters are impossibly dumb and ignorant to their decisions contrary to their continued arrogance about "being top experts in their field" & "experience with predators". Ascript can manufacturer action and plot in better ways than know-it-all idiots with the worst communication and planning far lower than is digestible. Sarah Harding is the worst; bossing others around while putting herself, then the group directly into harm's way. Annoyed as this could & should be better, having Spielberg in charge. 🤷‍♂️ Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/31/25 Full Review Read all reviews
