What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Lost World demonstrates how far CG effects have come in the four years since Jurassic Park; unfortunately, it also proves how difficult it can be to put together a truly compelling sequel.

Jay Boyar Orlando Sentinel Like the original, the sequel is uneven, sometimes moving in fits and starts. But the new film never really loses its momentum, and its big set pieces deliver. Rated: 5/5 Jun 30, 2025 Full Review Jami Bernard New York Daily News There's not much story or character development here, but you don't need that when you've got dynamite dinosaurs of all stripes and appetites. Rated: 3/4 Jun 30, 2025 Full Review Jay Carr Boston Globe It's sheer claptrap, but it's lively claptrap, with Spielberg skillfully reaching into his bag of shameless tricks to reinvent the chase movie and the cliffhanger. Jun 30, 2025 Full Review Todd Lothery News & Observer (Raleigh, NC) Visually and thematically darker than its precursor, The Lost World is canned entertainment. It lacks the wonder of the first film, perhaps an inevitability. What's more of a letdown is that it lacks the first one's heart. Rated: 1.5/4 Jun 30, 2025 Full Review Sean P. Means Salt Lake Tribune The Lost World: Jurassic Park, like its predecessor, combines gee-whiz effects with old-fashioned shots to the nervous system. Ooh and ahh all you want -- just get ready for the running and screaming. Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 30, 2025 Full Review Linda Cook Quad City Times (Davenport, IA) You literally see these creatures breathe, and the performances are so wonderful that it's hard to believe that the prehistoric brutes really are computer-generated. Dominic W An ultimately disappointing adaptation of one of the best sequel books ever written Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/26/25 Full Review Sebastian D It stumbles where the original soared. The plot is thinner, with contrived stakes and uneven pacing. Characters like Julianne Moore’s feel underdeveloped, and tonal shifts from awe to camp can jar. Still, the sheer spectacle and Goldblum’s charisma keep it engaging. The Lost World is a fun, thrilling sequel that doesn’t match Jurassic Park’s brilliance but delivers enough dino chaos to satisfy fans. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/21/25 Full Review Mark B Don't get me wrong, the visuals are absolutely gorgeous. Yet the plot is just so... terrible. It made me fall asleep and still was tired. Keep the effects, get rid of the story and make it good like the first or third movie. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/13/25 Full Review Tj A. Starts strong and interesting but then falls flat. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/05/25 Full Review Thomas V. While nowhere close to the OG, Jurassic Park: The Lost World had a great CGI T-Rex, some very good moments, but a wacky ending that doesn’t feel like it fits the rest of the franchise. The T-Rex roaming through San Diego was a debatably bad scene to include in this film. Other than that, the scenes in Isla Sorna were great, and this film did a good job of advancing the story in the film franchise. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/05/25 Full Review Hayleigh P. Probably one of the best dinosaur movies I’ve ever seen. The ending made my heart so happy 🥰 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/05/25 Full Review Read all reviews
