What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Lost World demonstrates how far CG effects have come in the four years since Jurassic Park; unfortunately, it also proves how difficult it can be to put together a truly compelling sequel.

Adam Nayman The Ringer While it pales in comparison to the original, there’s plenty to appreciate when viewed through a different lens. May 27, 2022 Full Review Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune I was disappointed as much as I was thrilled because "The Lost World" lacks a staple of Steven Spielberg's adventure films: exciting characters. Rated: 2/4 Apr 8, 2020 Full Review Chris Stuckmann ChrisStuckmann.com A remarkably underrated film that's actually improved with age. The FX are still dazzling, the filmmaking is top notch, and please put Jeff Goldblum in everything! Rated: A- May 26, 2015 Full Review Jim Ross TAKE ONE Magazine ...lost sight of some of the deeper things that allowed [the first film] to give a bit of weight to the more showy aspects. There's nowhere near as much attention to establishing the themes. Oct 24, 2024 Full Review Joseph Tomastik Loud and Clear Reviews Is it as good or groundbreaking as Jurassic Park? Definitely not ... But this is still an expertly-crafted, exciting film that’s packed with amazing sequences that take this series to a different, less glamorous, and more frantic place. Rated: 4/5 Oct 6, 2024 Full Review Brian Rowe InSession Film A film that has its moments, which includes some terrific action and visual effects, but overall remains one of Steven Spielberg's most disappointing and disposable entertainments in a mostly impressive career. Ralph R The Lost World: Jurassic Park tries to follow in the footsteps of the original masterpiece but stumbles along the way. While Spielberg delivers some thrilling action and stunning visuals, the movie lacks the charm and cohesion that made Jurassic Park so iconic. From the start, it feels like something is missing. The plot kicks off with a weak foundation, and motivations for the characters feel scattered and unclear, which makes it hard to connect with their journey. What really hurts the movie is the lack of focus. The story feels pulled in multiple directions, with some characters there to explore, others there to capture dinosaurs, and a few just along for the ride. This muddled narrative waters down the tension and excitement, leaving you questioning the point of certain scenes. Even Ian Malcolm, who was a standout in the first movie, struggles to carry the weight of a leading role here. The awe and wonder of the original have been replaced by darker tones and chaotic action, which might appeal to some but feels like a step back overall. That said, the movie does have its moments. The action sequences are gripping, and Spielberg still knows how to build tension when it counts. Visually, it’s as impressive as you’d expect, with dinosaurs that still hold up today. But ultimately, The Lost World feels like a sequel that’s trying too hard to recapture the magic of its predecessor without fully understanding what made it special in the first place. It’s worth a watch for the action and nostalgia, but don’t expect it to leave the same lasting impression as the original. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review Sean D Underrated sequel that is still entertaining. I can see why some don't like it (especially the San Diego part) but I think its a great sequel with Spielberg magic. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review nick s The directing is great... it's easy to tell Spielberg is at the helm. A lot of the dialogue is sharp. However the film had a few negatives too. The protagonists put people in extreme danger for no good reason, which was frustrating. You'd really run off with a wounded T-Rex baby while it's parents were wandering around? The blazing guns sequel feels a bit cliché (like Alien 2). Some special effects scenes were a bit overcooked (a la Indiana Jones). And the increasingly absurd ending outstayed it's welcome by about half an hour. Having said all that, this is still good family entertainment. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/15/25 Full Review Bobby B Pales in comparison, but is still nice. I mean, they did their best with a sequel. Almost. I wish they had followed the book mote, yet i do admit that the best scene is not in the book. I just wish it had stopped here... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/14/25 Full Review Audience Member Fav Movie of '97 The Lost World Jurassic Park has a lot in this film. Action packed dinosaurs and wrecking havoc. However the film story doesnt quite follow the novel plotline it self otherwise The Lost World wouldve been best sequel in Jurassic movie but still i enjoyed this movie after watching on tv many times as a kid and watching in few times in beautiful 4K HDR resolution Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/25 Full Review Birithivy Y The Lost World Jurassic Park - 10/10. Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. He's a director with a vision that was well ahead of his time. In terms of sequels and the way they are presented, I feel like Spielberg was a pioneer in terms of making sequels with a darker aesthetic and mood. Films like Temple Of Doom and The Lost World went down darker paths than the first instalments in their series (Raiders Of The Lost Ark and Jurassic Park respectively). In terms of The Lost World, I think it was the best decision to go down a more darker tone. The cinematography done by Janusz Kaminski is superb. The way he shoots the action scenes and uses shadows and the night almost like a separate character makes this film such a visual treat. Jurassic Park featured some amazing cinematography, but I feel like The Lost World is much stronger in terms of the visual tone it presents. People seem to have liked this film a little more as time has gone by. I've always loved it and it was one of my childhood favourites. Jurassic Park is definitely the best in the series, but The Lost World comes in a close second. There are more dinos (3 Trex!), Jeff Goldblum is promoted to being the lead (Ian Malcolm is one of my all time favourite characters) and John Williams delivers an amazing score. Its such a fun filled ride, and quite horror-esque (something that I feel movies like this should attempt to be like!). The movie never fails to entertain, and just feels like it ages extremely well for an action adventure film. I feel like the reason why it's considered underrated is because its the sequel to one of the greatest films ever made. Its a tall task to follow, but I think it does a great job! If somehow, you've never seen this movie, go watch it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/28/24 Full Review Read all reviews
