When a man is made a political prisoner in Hungary during the early fifties, his wife protects her ill mother in law from the shock by pretending that he is in the U.S. directing movies. A touching film with a meditative mellow feel and with revolutionary editing techniques that give it an even greater compellingly psychological depth.

it's a pity that hungarian cinema is swept to the fringes. beautiful cinematography by Janos Toth. Very quick editing of flashes of memories and fleeting images into the narrative, it is nostalgic like Zoltan Huszarik 'Szindbad' and bound to leave a tender impression.

This marvellous Hungarian film from Makk Karoly has it's artistic flourishes (beautiful b&w cinematography, some fractured editing symbolising memories) but is fundamentally a heartfelt drama about a young wife's love for her imprisoned husband, a mother's love for her son and a teasingly affectionate relationship between the wife and mother-in-law. The wife protects the mother from the truth about her son with a melodramatic tale about him being a famous and successful film director. It is one of those films where not much really happens, but the subtleties of the drama and relationships between the characters creates a nicely rounded, enjoyable drama.

Amazing editing, reminded me of Marker's La Jette. No need for a history class of Hungary, this film has universal appeal regarding fidelity, faith, illusion and love.

A womanâs husband is arrested for political reasons, and she endeavors to hide the fact from her mother-in-law. All the while, the government makes things more and more difficult for her. It has the austerity of a Bergman picture, but with light doses of humor. What really makes this unique is the use of quick flashes of memory and imagination, these momentary glimpses through the mindâs eye. Quite a good watch.
