Walter Elbertson (Timothy Bottoms), the handsome and restless son of an American doctor (Charles Baxter) isn't sure what he wants out of life. While touring Spain, Walter meets Lila Fisher (Maggie Smith), a pretty older British woman. Initially striking up a friendship with Lila, the awkward Walter soon falls for her, despite their age difference. The two begin an unlikely romance, leading to moments of both charming comedy and disarming poignancy.

It was a peculiarly soft, slapsticky interlude for director Alan J. Pakula between such quintessentially hard-edged 1970s classics as Klute, The Parallax View, and All the President’s Men... Go to Full Review

One of those immensely modest little 1970s dramedy gems that nobody talks about... but every time anyone sees one of them, their response is always the same: "that was a great little movie". Go to Full Review

Kate G 10/14/2024 This movie is one of my all time favorites. Lila's awkwardness is almost painful to watch and poor Walter is struggling under his accomplished father and sister. These two odd people traipsing about Spain are brought together by basic human decency. Don't we all want someone we can actually talk to? Despite societal norms and a fatal disease they decide to love each other. I can still see them riding burros together in La Mancha. As they say, it's a small movie but a timeless story. See more 09/15/2012 great spanish locations fill this drama I just recently discovered this '70's gem. See more 03/27/2012 ★★1/2 (out of four) A small, unpretentious little film from director Alan J. Pacula, who also made films like "The Sterile Cuckoo" and "Sophie's Choice". It is quiet, but a little too quiet which borders it on the uninvolving. Timothy Bottoms plays a college age student who takes a bicycle tour through Spain. He meets a Britsih woman, played by Maggie Smith, who is on anothert tour. She is older than him, but they hit it off and they leave their respected vacations to travel together. There is more going on than that, but I don't want to spoil anything. No surprise here is that the performances make the film, the story is not overly captivating.
