Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times This diffuse documentary lacks the urgency and reach of its staunch title. Rated: 2/5 Aug 24, 2012 Full Review Justin Chang Variety Macky Alston's raggedly structured docu duly honors his subject's conviction and courage, but largely sidesteps conflict and skirts the issues in an unrevealing talking-heads format. Jan 30, 2012 Full Review David Rooney The Hollywood Reporter A thoughtful reflection on the divisiveness of homosexuality in organized religion, focusing on the quiet crusade of openly gay bishop Gene Robinson. Jan 24, 2012 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com There's nothing innately wrong with Alston's documentary, other than that it seems to lack a cohesive focus. Rated: 2.5/5 Jul 24, 2019 Full Review Fr. Chris Carpenter Movie Dearest Equally inspiring and infuriating. Rated: B+ Aug 24, 2012 Full Review Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat Spirituality & Practice A moving chronicle of the slow but steady changes put into motion by the first openly gay Episcopal bishop in America. Audience Member "The Church always has the tendency to claw on the carpet as it's being dragged out of the past." That clawing is ugly in Love Free or Die, as Robinson receives hate mail and death threats. But he embraces the chance to make such "clawing" visible, taking it as an opportunity to invite for the Church to act against fear and ignorance. "It's time religious institutions took responsibility for what their speech empowers people to do," the bishop says. He's taken a first step. A beautiful and important film made by Macky Alston and his talented editor Chris White. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie changed my life. Bishop Robinson is such a hero and the film is so artful. At a Sundance screening (where it won a special jury prize), I heard the programmer say that this film is made with such class and elegance. See it!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Very thought-provoking. Definitely a good documentary to see. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member A captivating look at the debate over gay priests and marriage in the Episcopal Church, Love Free or Die examines the conflicts between faith, love, ethics, and politics in a tender and hopeful fashion. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Inspiring and an important document of the civil rights battle. It's a wonderful film and highly recommended, but I wish it had an even broader message. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Fascinating, inspiring film Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Read all reviews
