Audience Member Silly, but so kawaii, can't fail to enjoy this! It's apparently based on a manga, so it is a little exaggerated with some very over the top characters. (I am sure that older sister is played by a man). The teacher with the wig is amusing too. Overall just a nice, cute little teen movie. I liked it a lot. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Lovely Complex is probably one of the best and funniest rom-com animes I've seen, following Otani and Risa who have a height difference and see each other as a comedic duo with their constant jabs and jokes at one another. The highlight is seeing such a duo who usually rip on each other for fun try to build a romance, with awkward yet funny and interesting results. As usual, it's hard and yet unreasonable to expect for a live-action adaptation to reach the exact heights of the show. That said, the film makes a fair effort. The chemistry between Risa and Otani is there, with good performances. I did find it interesting how the film did its own quirky style, given that the quirky comedic style of the anime would be complicated to replicate outside the format. Given, the humour here is less common, though more bizarre and cheesy than the show, but its does give some laughs. Arguably, their roles as a comedic duo isn't as well established, the whole thing with the height doesn't work because it's quickly forgotten and they're barely different in height unlike the show, and there were a lot of moments that I realized would have made less sense without having seen the anime, so clearly there was a matter of squishing in a few things, yet having limited time to focus on them. The film has a short runtime and some of it clearly suffers from that, but they also did a good job condensing arcs into singular scenes without much hiccup. Ultimately, the problem is that it pushes aside the main staples of the show, and what starts out fun becomes a standard love complex story. The movie ends off achieving the same feel that the show did, where you've seen the couple go through their troubles and are rewarded to see them together with their strong chemistry fully realized, but cause it happened so quickly and had less motivation, it isn't as rewarding as in the show. Lovely Complex could've made a fun movie, and this one is somewhat fun, but its formulaic path is a bit disappointing. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member It's actually one of the best live actions I have ever seen... It's totally a must watch :) Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member funny and good live action Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Charming, funny, romantic, sad, silly. Everything a first-love flick should be. The simple story of a height-challenged boy in love with the tallest girl is augmented by a manga-inspired visual flair, and set in the ultra colorful world of hip contemporary Japan, where teenagers' hairstyles and fashion accessories are more interesting and awe-inspiring than most American summer action flicks. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member The best Anime and Manga series and real life movie on the anime and the Manga series but a lot of things were changed.
