Critics Consensus

Amanda Seyfried and Peter Sarsgaard do their best with the material, but Lovelace lacks enough depth and conviction to truly do its fascinating subject justice.

Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/15/24 Full Review Lúcio Leonardo P At first it seemed to me like an empty film, wanting to show a porn fairy tale, with some gaps not filled, then, the story is being completed and there is nothing fairy tale about it. It can't be easy being a porn actor or actress, no matter how "hot" a night for two or even the solitude of a Friday night may be, the underground world of the porn industry is far from glamorous. And Linda Lovelace's trajectory could not be different. And whoever is thinking that there will be "putzzaria à la vontê", can take the horse out of the rain, as the entire plot is shown in a light way, but without losing the heavy tone that was Lovelace's life. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/05/24 Full Review Gareth v A solid biopic, that could of easily gone down the pornographic path given the subject matter but refrained. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/20/23 Full Review Daniel D This is not a terrible movie, but it's not a good one either. As others have observed, the script was so weak that the actors never had a chance to make it good. But they tried. Amanda Seyfried gave a damn fine performance -- such that the movie was bad in spite of her, not because of her. Still, she should be more selective about the scripts she chooses. This one was just uninspired and unoriginal. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/08/22 Full Review dave s The first half of Lovelace plays itself out in a linear, paint-by-numbers manner as it details the life of Deep Throat actress Linda Lovelace (Amanda Seyfried) from the time she was living under the oppressive rule of her parents until the time she left home with adult entertainment hustler Chuck Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard). Just when it appears that the film is going to stick to the standard biopic formula, events start to pinball around in time, creating a confusion that was probably similar to Lovelace's turbulent life. While the whole thing is a bit of a mixed bag, it is ultimately saved by Seyfried's performance, a raw and gritty portrayal of a strangely iconic performer, a tragic figure whose life was, sadly, defined by a single performance. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Critics have been too hard on "behind the scenes" dramatization of Linda Lovelace's escape and survival story. The acting is exemplary throughout; the entire cast deserves tremendous accolades, but I'll single our Amanda Seyfried as Linda and Sharon Stone as her mother. The script and to some extent the direction prevent this bio pic and examination of 70s porn from being the classic it could have been. While told from Linda's point of view, Lovelace could have been more psychologically probing and less superficial. A great effort though, worth you time, especially if you idolize any celebrity. Their real life may be nothing you'd expect. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Read all reviews
