What to Know

Critics Consensus

The transition from novel to film is awkwardly executed, and Sedgwick's character, despite the attempts to make her sympathetic, merely comes across as creepy and crazy.

Rex Reed Observer Even though Loverboy is only 86 minutes long, as it wore on, I wore out. Jun 21, 2006 Full Review Richard Roeper Ebert & Roeper There is a lot of skill on display here and a great performance but I can't recommend it either because this woman is so clearly and obviously abusive and insane. Jun 19, 2006 Full Review Kyle Smith New York Post First-time director Kevin Bacon (Mr. Sedgwick) cleverly maintains a balance of discomfiting and familiar by jumping nimbly around Emily's life. Rated: 3/4 Jun 16, 2006 Full Review Jeff Vice Deseret News (Salt Lake City) Remarkably unsubtle and by-the-numbers, and thanks to some curious plotting, it's also a bit shrill and unpleasant. Rated: 2/4 Jul 28, 2006 Full Review Chris Hewitt St. Paul Pioneer Press If the situations are intentionally unreal, Sedgwick's performance could not be more real. Vera A This movie is 100% underrated. Yes it was odd at times, it was also thought provocative. Those who felt different sorry you missed what it was about. It's not out of the norm for a mother, then I've known mothers who name kids differently, and are over the top possessive to the highest extreme like Emily was with her son Paul who she nicknamed Loverboy. I personally recommend watching this movie Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/12/23 Full Review steve d Far too much talent were brought together to make this unpleasant of a film. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie was creepy, it stayed with me in a bad way. I love Kyra Sedwick and Kevin Bacon though. Sedwick plays a helicopter mother to her son, she has flashbacks to her creepy childhood a movie to see at your own will. I'd not watch it again kind of a hard watch. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member This is hands down one of the most stomach turning pieces of shits I've ever suffered every minute through. A worthless adaption with horrible writing, horrible characters and the most over romantizised, painful and disturbing endings I've ever seen! If I had a hammer and enough time, I would destroy every copy and burn them. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member Sorry Kevin , not that great , an overprotecting for her son ....to little Bacon to ! Did choose 2 weak movies for Saturday ! Seen it on my DVD Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review alex k My Favorite Film Is 1941's Citizen Kane. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
