Critics Consensus

Luckiest Girl Alive means well and Mila Kunis does strong work in the central role, but those positive points are overshadowed by a treatment that risks trivializing its themes.

Luckiest Girl Alive can be uncomfortably intense, but this is a story worth telling -- and Mila Kunis does it justice with an eye-opening dramatic performance.

The issues here couldn’t be more pertinent. But Knoll’s thriller is a sleek but pretty crude example of processing PTSD for Netflix and chilling... Go to Full Review

Luckiest Girl Alive keeps telling us that we are watching a biting depiction of sublimated grief and rage, but the movie bounces along at such a weird pace that nothing can sink in or register as more than garish, tossed-off plot detail. Go to Full Review

As formulaic as it is, the story nonetheless confronts the persistence of guilt over past questionable behavior and how people struggle to deal with it, even long after the fact. Go to Full Review

Sarah R Oct 11 Raw, relatable, and hauntingly real. Luckiest Girl Alive captures how women mask pain to survive, the weight of expectations, and the quiet battle to find yourself again. See more Brandon A Aug 3 Honestly found it very hard to get through. And not because of the "triggering/uncomfortable" scenes. Usually those scenes are certainly hard to watch, but in this movie the scenes felt forced to add to the realness but I felt it lacked depth, and seemed cheap and cliché which is hard to say for r*pe scenes. I love Mila Kunis, but I found her acting in this quite unwatchable; the inner dialog was even worse. Movie had potential, but I think the casting and pacing could've been much better. See more izzy D. @curly Jul 31 I think it was good. Wouldn’t say it was excellent. It started out like a thriller type of movie making you guess. But at the end it became predictable. See more Jul 17 The message was good, and Mila Kunis seems like a nice person, so I feel a little guilty saying her acting made this almost unwatchable. There's no nuance in her performance. She should stick to comedy. A stilted script and the fact that the actress playing the younger version of Kunis looks absolutely nothing like her didn't help. See more Anne B May 10 I've never seen a piece showing the power dynamics and lifelong impact of sexual trauma with such nuance. This is a powerhouse film with amazing character development. The flippant internal dialogue of the main character make it a little lighter--it is not a mistake. The main character is an "unreliable narrator" and in this story we get to witness her transformation. Intense, but healing--for those who are ready to go where this film can take you. See more Harish N @harish_napa Apr 21 "Luckiest Girl Alive," available on Netflix, presents a compelling premise and a talented lead in Mila Kunis, but ultimately struggles with a pacing that hinders its overall engagement. While the film hints at a dark past and potential suspense, its narrative unfolds at a languid pace, making it difficult to remain fully invested in the story. Mila Kunis delivers a strong performance as Ani Fanelli, a woman with a seemingly perfect life that masks a traumatic past. Her portrayal is nuanced and carries the weight of her character's hidden struggles. However, even her compelling performance isn't enough to fully elevate a film that often feels stagnant. The movie takes its time revealing key details of Ani's past, which, while intended to build suspense, often results in a lack of momentum in the present-day narrative. The parallel storylines, while crucial to understanding Ani's character, don't always blend seamlessly, contributing to the feeling that the story isn't moving forward at a satisfying rate. While the film touches upon important themes of trauma and its lasting impact, the execution sometimes feels heavy-handed, and the emotional resonance is diluted by the slow pacing. The lack of a consistent sense of urgency makes it challenging to remain fully engaged with Ani's journey and the secrets she harbors. Overall, "Luckiest Girl Alive" has the foundation for a gripping psychological drama, and Mila Kunis's performance is a definite highlight. However, its slow pace and lack of consistent engagement prevent it from fully realizing its potential. See more Read all reviews
