When a boyfriend tricks Lucy (Scarlett Johansson) into delivering a briefcase to a supposed business contact, the once-carefree student is abducted by thugs who intend to turn her into a drug mule. She is surgically implanted with a package containing a powerful chemical, but it leaks into her system, giving her superhuman abilities, including telekinesis and telepathy. With her former captors in pursuit, Lucy seeks out a neurologist (Morgan Freeman), who she hopes will be able to help her.

Critics Consensus

Enthusiastic and silly, Lucy powers through the movie's logic gaps with cheesy thrills plus Scarlett Johansson's charm -- and mostly succeeds at it.

It's a film that takes great delight in her essentially co-opting a long series of tropes and storylines typically reserved for men in stories of this type, which is an old trope in the feminist action movie wheelhouse. Go to Full Review

let it grab you by the noodle and zap you into its whacked-out vision of human existence. You'll feel much better for it, I promise. Go to Full Review

Say what you will about 'Lucy,' which is an absurdly silly and sometimes aggressively stupid movie, but it's at least interested in showing us something new. Go to Full Review

It's basically a fantasy wrapped in the guise of science and used as an excuse for an action thriller, but what a thriller. This is a kinetic explosion at its best with Johansson striding through it with a sense of drive and assuredness... Go to Full Review

Lucy‘s two strands co-exist, intercut but separate; the pleasure is in ricocheting between two incompatible elements for an entire movie, making those blunt opening juxtapositions surprisingly indicative of what’s to come. Go to Full Review

Besson packs a lot of ideas into the brief 89-minute runtime, but he should've spent another 20 minutes on character development. Go to Full Review

Ashish G @Ashishgunjal7 4d I watched this movie and, I loved it. It is a short sci-fi action thriller movie. The main idea of this movie is what if human could unlock the full potentials of their brain. Currently normal humans do not even use 30% of their brain. In the movie, the actress mistakenly get drug in the body, and after that, she started using 100% of her brain. She can sense things faster and she started controlling the things which is not possible for the normal human. she became extraordinary person. Main thing is that what happens if human can use their brain 100%. See more Amy W. @RT27921585 5d Are you looking for a movie to watch after a couple drinks? Did you have a good night with friends? Are you so excited for a reimagining of limitless? Well don’t be. This movie pmo so bad I got rage baited by how dumb the premise of using “10%” of your brain is then swiftly was disappointed further but Luc Besson’s feeble attempts to make a “badass woman” trope come to life through some Breaking Bad meth and Scarlett Johannsons best autism impression. The only thing worse than the monkey flashback was paying for Netflix and realizing my money is going to stocking shit like this. Did I love the Korean and French guys shooting 24/7 while Lucy just makes everybody fall asleep (what fucking power is that?) ? Couldn’t be arsed to return from the bathroom after the minimal efforts made to have Morgan Freeman sound smart about evolution but I’d wipe my ass with a book written by whoever cleaned the toilets for the set they shot this on. God bless whoever tried to imprison Luc Besson. See more Dilettante 7 @RT82395896 May 17 Hmm. Sounds like "Limitless." Good premise. Cheezy remake? Nope. Damn, she's good. And gets better as she goes. The screenplay is credible, a stretch for SF flics. Good cinematography. Unobtrusive but effective music. Better and better. Better than i thought it would be. Never a dull moment. Aw, it's over. Johansson has dissolved into the cosmos. Too bad, she looked really good as a human. That was a lot of fun. See more Martin B @RT44235356 May 7 I get it, not cinematic excellence and the premise is sketchy. I've watched it twice over the years, liked it each time I'm guessing because of the two leads. That and the fact it was linear going from beginning to end at a steady, understandable pace toward a satisfying albeit questionable ending. See more Skeptic - @RT29792216 Apr 25 The special effects guys got a pay day and license to do as they please. The longer it went on the worse the storyline got. I anticipated something half decent with Morgan Freeman in the cast, but this one isn't one of his best decisions. Don't waste your time. See more Eric B @EricB10 Apr 24 Headed in a great direction, until it didn't. I mean, a brain working at 100% capacity perhaps COULD do all the things the film depicts, but why would it? I mean - (spoiler alert) - if it could fully control it's host body at 40%, why would it need drugs? Maybe it still would, but at 60% or 70%? And that is the problem with this film: it posits some great stuff, then retreats into nonsense created by a human using only 10% of it's brain capacity. Ken Russell's "Altered States" was far better because Writer Paddy Chayefsky and Director Ken Russell kept the story within the realm of believability, despite the unbelievable journey "Eddie Jessup" took. "Altered States" was a great film. "Lucy" could have been. Besson's "The Fifth Element", a fantastic film depicting a fantastic future reality, was believable in no small part because things made sense, moment-to-moment. In "Lucy", one moment you're on board, the next, you're scratching your head. See more Read all reviews
