Critics Consensus

Enthusiastic and silly, Lucy powers through the movie's logic gaps with cheesy thrills plus Scarlett Johansson's charm -- and mostly succeeds at it.

Emily St. James Vox It's a film that takes great delight in her essentially co-opting a long series of tropes and storylines typically reserved for men in stories of this type, which is an old trope in the feminist action movie wheelhouse. Sep 26, 2016 Full Review David Sims The Atlantic let it grab you by the noodle and zap you into its whacked-out vision of human existence. You'll feel much better for it, I promise. Sep 22, 2016 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire Say what you will about 'Lucy,' which is an absurdly silly and sometimes aggressively stupid movie, but it's at least interested in showing us something new. Jun 18, 2016 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand It's basically a fantasy wrapped in the guise of science and used as an excuse for an action thriller, but what a thriller. This is a kinetic explosion at its best with Johansson striding through it with a sense of drive and assuredness... May 6, 2023 Full Review Vadim Rizov Filmmaker Magazine Lucy‘s two strands co-exist, intercut but separate; the pleasure is in ricocheting between two incompatible elements for an entire movie, making those blunt opening juxtapositions surprisingly indicative of what’s to come. PIXELEYE P Besides the massive plot holes that come with it, Lucy is an entertaining movie. I like the premise, even though it doesn’t really make sense if you think about it but oh well. The action scenes are great and the CGI is surprisingly good. One thing I couldn’t rap my head around however is why on earth does Lucy not save the people who are getting shot/dying in the film? She has all these reality bending powers yet never saves anyone, nor does she permanently restrain the mobsters who are clearly out to kill her and anyone that stands in their way… It just felt weird to me. Otherwise this was really entertaining. I assume this whole idea of "using 100% of our brains" wouldn’t give us all these god-like powers in real life but I guess it’s fun to think about. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/29/25 Full Review C S Spoilers. What i found good: 1. They must've poured in a lot of money into the CGI and visuals. They were good. 2. Always buildup of tension, kept me hooked. What i found meh...: 1. The storyline. At first, it begins by saying that humans always create an origin story centered on their own. Then, it ends by showing how humanity can smh control others and gravity and travel back time and break all the laws of physics by... activating more neurones. Isnt this the most self-centered thing ever. "We were born with Type 7 civilisation esque potential and we just need to activate it! :))))" 2. Plotholes. I dont understand. Lucy was dying because she ingested the drug and her cells chose immortality or smth. Then at the end of movie after ingesting so much of the drug, she transcends into the Internet and becomes immortal that way. Umm, someone please explain how this works? Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/14/25 Full Review Neil S Another Luc Besson visual delight in the shape of Scarlett Johannson. Great to see Mr Wu away from his all you can eat buffet in Benidorm lol. Thoughtful to say the least. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/11/25 Full Review Paul D. I just love these type of movies and Scarlett Johansson was amazing in her role. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/08/25 Full Review Manuel P Stop it with this lie that "we only use 1% of our brains", it is a stupid premise and actually untrue. It showcases your ignorance on the matter you intend to develop your stupid idea for a movie on. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/22/25 Full Review Bill G This may be one of the best movies I've ever seen. Step back though. You will hear criticisms of how this is pseudo-science and there are plot holes, etc. and all those critics are right. What they don't realize is the potential of this movie as to how humankind can evolve. Is it weird? Yes. Does it have a weird ending? Yes. But the potential for humanity is expressed as I've never seen it expressed before. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/13/25 Full Review Read all reviews
