      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Natalie Portman gives it her all, but it isn't enough to overcome Lucy in the Sky's confused approach to its jumbled story.

Audience Member When you never really return from a trip, strange things can happen. A trip to space, in this case. The story is loosely based on real events at NASA, with the downward spiral of the protagonist ending in criminal territory. Nataly Portman and Jon Hamm are both convincing in their roles, as is the German-born Zazie Beetz, who just had screentime in 'Joker'. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Diana Very slow and confusing Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/02/19 Full Review Carl The acting was okay, but I,did not enjoy the movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/25/19 Full Review Robyn R I wasn't sure what to expect from this movie and got even less. It was slow and tedious . How can I get that time back? Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/22/19 Full Review Michael Horing Natalie Portman is great as always but the movie is confusing and makes no sense Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/22/19 Full Review William B Portman plays a great crazy astronaut, but Lucy is just not likable, and I don’t think everyone involved with this movie had the same vision. Is the point perhaps that there IS no point, or were they aiming for something here? Worse: such story as there is here pivots around a moment which feels forced. Stay home on this one, and better luck next time, Ms. Portman. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/21/19 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Beatrice Loayza Bitch Media Hawley articulates Lucy's mental breakdown as if running through an uninspired checklist of bourgeois female suffering that he hopes will compensate for a lack of character building. Mar 15, 2021 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review A film I enjoyed far more than I thought I would. Dec 10, 2019 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) It's proper acting, from one of the modern greats. Rated: 4/5 Dec 9, 2019 Full Review Jeffrey Harris 411mania Natalie Portman puts in a strong, committed performance and offers an interesting perspective of a smart, competent woman who suffers from a mental breakdown. However, it's not enough to elevate a weak script and tonally uneven direction. Rated: 4/10 Aug 5, 2022 Full Review Milana Vujkov Lola On Film I enjoyed its inconsistent but witty digressions. Sometimes, the right type of prose elevates the turmoil of shoddy romance, too prosaic to encounter through poetic means. Rated: 3/5 Jul 31, 2021 Full Review Douglas Greenwood NME (New Musical Express) Natalie Portman's talents are put to waste in this hapless story of an astronaut losing herself as she returns back to earth.
