Buuel posits a more existential relationship between Crusoe, nature and, most significantly, the character's loneliness.

Observing the figure of Crusoe in the round, Buñuel finds the prismatic reflections of all manner of hermits, cranks, and holy fools.

There are enough superb moments in this made-in-Mexico version of Defoe's classic novel to outweigh its occasional dullness of camera style.

A good flick that follows the book closely but, hey, it's Bunuel trying to direct a "normal" film. Need I say more? Well, worth a look and a tub of popcorn on a rainy afternoon...

Among the best screen adaptations of a classic work of literature. Visually hypnotic, haunting and suspenseful - even though we all know the story. Profoundly moving in the end as the one-time slaver triumphs over his bigotry to become a wise and compassionate human being. Superb performance by the young Dan O'Herlihy. This film demands to be remastered and digitally restored. Can now be seen periodically on TCM.

Perhaps the most "normal" film made by Luis Buñuel but not as simple as it may seem, since you can find a lot here about power relationships, religion, civilization and - most especially - loneliness, in an adaptation that benefits from a solid performance by Dan O'Herlihy.
