Ultimately, it’s a bit of a mess, but it has luridly entertaining moments nonetheless. Go to Full Review

Contrasted with his best work, Miike's latest horror turn barely scrapes any interesting ideas. Go to Full Review

The problem is that by halfheartedly trying to take an ‘explanatory’ route, Lumberjack the Monster turns its back on serving up perverse, gory genre fare. Go to Full Review

Although quite well done, there is nothing truly original here, resulting in too much of ‘seen this done that' throughout the movie Go to Full Review

It does deliver a share of grisly/bizarre surface pleasures, yet Miike's devotees might well wish for a little less talk and more exploration of the gritty/disturbing possibilities of the material. Go to Full Review

Due F Dec 1 Lumberjack the Monster transforms a serial-killer premise into a psychological journey that explores identity, empathy, and the shadows within human nature. Through Akira Ninomiya’s chilling yet fragile transformation, the film blends mystery, introspection, and quiet emotional shifts that reveal a man learning—fearfully—to feel. Despite some underdeveloped characters, it delivers a gripping and elegant unraveling of darkness, bound together by the haunting fairy tale that frames its story. From the very beginning it will have you engaged in its creepy feel and disturbing imagery. The movie has many elements involving modern scientific and biological experimentation and their dangers- a modern day Frankenstein's tale, if you will. The acting and cinematography are very engaging. The characters are strong. The story is good, but there are elements that are a little hard to follow. The pacing and action are good. I really like the films of Japan. They have their own sensibility and sense of originality. Worth seeing. I used to loved Miike, but this was dull, overestimated its concepts, and didn’t have a lot of great visuals or interesting dialogue. My Gen-X hot take : there was wave of stunning, influential cutting-edge dramas, horror films, and thrillers made by Japanese and Korean filmmakers (like this very director); now, the majority of recent films seem more influenced by K-dramas & anime as far as acting, casting, and production. If you’re a fan of Mike’s earlier, interesting work, this will bore you. See more Read all reviews
