Wendy Ide Screen International Ultimately, it’s a bit of a mess, but it has luridly entertaining moments nonetheless. Oct 31, 2023 Full Review Tom Meek Cambridge Day The auteur of J-horror [Miike] gets back to his gory roots. Rated: 2.5/4 Jun 13, 2024 Full Review Fred Barrett In Review Online Contrasted with his best work, Miike's latest horror turn barely scrapes any interesting ideas. Jun 12, 2024 Full Review Steve Erickson Arts Fuse The problem is that by halfheartedly trying to take an ‘explanatory’ route, Lumberjack the Monster turns its back on serving up perverse, gory genre fare. Jun 12, 2024 Full Review Panos Kotzathanasis Asian Movie Pulse Although quite well done, there is nothing truly original here, resulting in too much of ‘seen this done that' throughout the movie Rated: 6.5 Jun 9, 2024 Full Review Michael Gingold Rue Morgue Magazine It does deliver a share of grisly/bizarre surface pleasures, yet Miike's devotees might well wish for a little less talk and more exploration of the gritty/disturbing possibilities of the material. acsdoug D Not one of Miike's better efforts. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/22/24 Full Review Marc Z This is a very cool and unusual thriller out of the Japanese film market. From the very beginning it will have you engaged in its creepy feel and disturbing imagery. The movie has many elements involving modern scientific and biological experimentation and their dangers- a modern day Frankenstein's tale, if you will. The acting and cinematography are very engaging. The characters are strong. The story is good, but there are elements that are a little hard to follow. The pacing and action are good. I really like the films of Japan. They have their own sensibility and sense of originality. Worth seeing. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/07/24 Full Review Audience Member Maybe if you’re all out of options or on a plane, you could watch something worse? But this was a bit dull, overestimates the concepts, and doesn’t have a lot of great visuals or interesting dialogue. My unsolicited, aging-Gen-X hot take : Japanese and Korean filmmakers used to produce an abundance of cutting edge & influential dramas, horror films, and thrillers, but have now (like this very director) come to resemble cheaper, less artistic K-dramas & anime as far as acting, casting, and production. If you’re a fan of Mike’s earlier, interesting work, this might bore you. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/03/24 Full Review Read all reviews
